12 ways we can help

It was a hellish 20-hour journey undertaken in the middle of winter with thousands of refugees. — @ukrainelive2022 on Twitter

I just read the most horrific thing. Manny Marotta is covering what is happening in Ukraine via Twitter and I came across a Twitter Thread that blew my mind from the comfort of my home in the United States.

The story continues to unfold on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine and every time I read accounts don't he ground I wonder more and more about what we can do for the people in the country and being displaced as they travel into the European Union.

Before we get to that, I want to share the Twitter thread so you can have an idea of the situation as of yesterday:

I can’t even imagine being conscripted into a defense force in what seems like a hopeless situation. Especially being taken from my family, my wife, and three daughters, who would likely be forced to make the 80km hike to Poland (50 miles).

I would like to think that I would stand and fight for my country, but as I sit here at the kitchen counter thinking of my eight, five, and one-year-olds I can’t imagine parting with them to potentially never see them again.

So, this morning, I was thinking, what can we do to help the displaced people of Ukraine and what can we do for those stuck in the country as it is under siege?

How We Can Help Ukraine

Here is a list of resources that I have found from several other publications around the internet. I would like to spread them around as much as possible so we can find ways to help.

  • United Help Ukraine: This non-profit volunteer organization provides medical supplies, food, and donations to Ukrainian refugees and individuals on the ground in Ukraine, as well as support to Ukrainian families who have lost loved ones in the conflict.
  • Nova Ukraine: a non-profit organization headquartered in Ukraine, provides individuals with anything from baby food and hygiene goods to clothing and household items.
  • Red Cross: A monetary donation can assist with the rehabilitation of homes or infrastructure, such as water pumping stations, as well as the provision of mental health and educational services. In addition, the Red Cross educates people on how to avoid land mines and explosive munitions.
  • Voices of Children: The Charitable Foundation of the Ukrainian organization helps provide psychological and psychosocial support to children afflicted by the armed conflict. Art therapy, video storytelling, offering mobile psychologists, and even individual aid for families.
  • USA for UNHCR: The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in the United States is taking donations through a restricted fund to offer immediate help to children, women, and men affected by Ukraine’s turmoil.
  • People in Need: Approximately 200,000 people are receiving humanitarian help on the ground. They provide food packages, emergency shelter, safe drinking water, hygiene supplies, and coal for warmth to individuals in need.
  • UNICEF: A donation would enable UNICEF to continue delivering safe drinking water to conflict-affected areas and prepositioning health, hygiene, and emergency education items as close to populations as feasible. UNICEF’s mobile teams are also supported by funding.
  • Sunflower of Peace: The non-profit is gathering funds to prepare first-aid medical tactical backpacks for front-line paramedics and doctors. Each bag is designed for groups of 5 to ten people and includes a variety of first aid materials such as bandages, anti-hemorrhagic drugs, and medical instruments.
  • Razom for Ukraine: Razom, which means “together” in Ukrainian, was created in 2014 to help Ukrainians following Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The volunteer organization is now on the ground, assisting soldiers and physicians on the front lines.
  • CARE International: is responding to the crisis by offering food, hygiene kits, psychosocial support services, access to water, and cash to Ukrainians in need.
  • Save the Children: Save the Children, a London-based organization, assists in the delivery of life-saving relief to children in Ukraine and around the world. The organization is “delivering crucial humanitarian relief” in the United States and other parts of the world.
  • Come Back Alive: The Kyiv Independent has recommended giving to Come Back Alive, a local nonprofit. It helps the Ukrainian military by providing them with supplies, protection, training, and psychological support.

*Please note, I do not have any previous affiliations with these organizations and please be sure to do your own research when it comes to donations to any of the above organizations.

Final Thoughts

No matter what you think about war, Russia, or Ukraine there is nothing worse than the effects war has on a people. One thing I know for sure is that we can help out in different ways.

These twelve options that I have listed are my way of sharing what we can do when things are so early in the conflict. Especially when we don’t know much about how we can help from countries far removed.
