What Can Poetry Add?

A mathematician tries his hand at haiku

With the prerequisite terrible pun which you’d expect from any half-decent math teacher now out of the way after that title, let me say that I do very seriously believe in growing. I think it would be good for my soul to expand into new realms. We’ll start with poetry.

I’m a new author for the ILLUMINATION, which you should definitely join if you want somewhere that takes merciful pity on beginners like us but also gives professionals a forum to talk about the things we’re already strong in as well. They have a poetry section, so I‘ll add my poems written in a style called “haiku”.

The three-line poems have syllables arranged in a 5–7–5 pattern, which is an attractive constraint for a mind like mine. It gives some kind of formulaic structure to an otherwise overwhelming and paralyzing infinity of possibilities.

Here’s where I’ve gotten onto the page so far, please give feedback no matter how they strike you. Unless they’re so boring and the pictures I’ve chosen are so ugly that you can’t even bear to click, in which case, oof… But yes, go ahead and tell me that too.

Thanks so much for reading! Hopefully, you thought these short poems were elegant instead of paltry, but either way, the investment was small, right?

If you’re interested in learning more about me, you can check out my bio here, which ILLUMINATION recommends all of us to create, and which I think is a fantastic idea.
