What Are Some Of The Best Life-Changing Books? Why?

A life changing book is one which helps us to elevate our soul to lead a blissful life. — It is just not the worldly success to become wealthy and enjoy the fleeting pleasures of the world.

One must realize that the source of bliss and happiness lies within our own self-soul and not in the worldly objects outside.

How to understand the deep secret of action and inaction? — Bhagavad Gita is the most Holy and exalted Scripture to reveal the secrets of right living with moderation in everything to lead a blissful life.

Human beings take birth to fulfil their destiny and wipe-off their karmic debt. — Life is simply not to run a big business, a better job or a wife or a husband to fulfil our needs and have children. — Human life is meant to fulfil a distinctive purpose for which we are born.

I give here excerpt as a sample page from my book ‘Word of God Bhagavad Gita.’

Bhagavad Gita:

Even the wise are perplexed as to what constitutes an action, and what is inaction (no-action). — Therefore I shall explain to you what is action, after knowing which you shall be freed from their evil-effects. — (Book: Word of God Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 4 verse 16)

Read this story.

There was once a person who was so devoted to Lord Krishna, that he will spend his whole day chanting the name of the of the God like a parrot. He used to tell the villagers that whenever he will be in dire need of help, God himself will come to help him.

He had a blind faith, but no true knowledge or wisdom; nor had he read any of the Holy Scriptures. — He just used to chant the name of the God mechanically, and he considered himself a very wise person.

It so happened that during the rainy season, there were continuous heavy rains for many days; and the whole village was flooded with water everywhere.

Rains kept pouring with all the fury, and there was no sign of abating. The water level continued to rise and entered the houses on the ground floor. — He started praying fervently and called God for help.

A boat man came and asked him to jump into the boat to go to the higher lands. But he refused and said in his pride that people did not know his faith in God. — The boat man went away.

The water level still kept on rising, and he climbed to the first floor of his house. A second boat came but he again refused to go in the boat, and said that God has got to help him under all circumstances, and he is sure of that.

The water level further rose and he went to the second floor and started praying to God furiously. A third boat man came and asked him to please come into the boat. — He refused and said he had full faith in God. Finally the floods swept away all the houses along with him, and he died.

His soul sought an audience with God and said, “Oh God! I had total faith in You Sir, and still you did not come to rescue me in the floods when I was drowning. You know God; you are almighty and powerful, and I did not miss a single day, when I did not chant Your Holy name, and offer my ritualistic prayers.”

God replied, “I came to help you but you refused my help. Not only once, but I came three times in the form of a boat man, but you did not recognize Me. You were so full of pride and arrogance of your devotional chanting that you did not listen to anyone.”

The moral of the story is that we should not be so ignorant to think that only our ritualistic chanting is the best and the devotion of all others is useless. — God helps those who help themselves.

That man was counting on God for help, and God was counting on him to take the necessary ‘action’ to save himself. — ‘Action’ was required in this case and not ‘Inaction’.

The above verse says that one must know when action is required, and when no-action is required. The wise man knows when to act and when to refrain from actions.

Bhagavad Gita:

It is needful to understand and discriminate as to what is ‘desired action’; what is ‘prohibited and forbidden action’; and what is ‘inaction’. — For complex and mysterious indeed are the ways of actions. — -Book: Word of God Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 4 verse 17)

The above verse talks about the consequences of three types of actions: — karmanah: — action: —vikarmanah: — forbidden action: — akarmanah: — inaction; — which ought to be known and understood: — Gahana… karmanah… gatih: — -for mysterious are the ways of karma.

There is no escape from the effects of one’s deeds and karma done in the past. The effects of past deeds can somehow be nullified, by performing righteous and good deeds in the present. — A cause produces an effect, which in turn becomes a new cause.

The retribution of tit for tat in this way becomes endless. It is like a vicious circle and getting stuck in a vortex, and then it becomes increasingly difficult to come out of the effects of one’s deeds. — Our motive good or bad is what finally determines the fruit of actions.

Bible (Ecclesiastes) ruminates on the meaning of life and says, “ There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven; a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot; a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build;

a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up,

a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace. What does the worker gain from his toil?”
