What a Simple Rock Can Do
Renew your sparkle quickly
“Through God, everyone sparkles.”
— John Ericson
Some weeks I feel like an Uber Driver without a paycheck.
Whether it’s driving my husband to the shop, my son to and from school, going to babysit at my daughter’s house, taking my mom or myself to a doctor's appointment, plus shopping, I sometimes feel like I live in the car.
I had a job several years back where I used to drive around to different locations. It was during this time; I discovered how a simple rock could change my life.
I published a haiku with a short story about it not too long ago. I didn’t go much into detail other than explaining that I have a smooth rock that I keep in my car and use as a prayer rock. In addition, my grandson would tell you it’s his happy rock.
Sometimes traffic can set my anxiety off while rushing to school, work, or an appointment. Or, let’s face it, I can already be struggling with chaos before entering the driver's seat.
I used this rock in the car when I was alone, but now I use it whenever I need a sparkle. My grandson has grown up with the rock too.
What is a prayer rock?
The name of the rock isn’t as important as what it can do for you or others. Its smooth texture is very soothing. My rock is pink and black. If by the end of this story you are convinced you might like one, I recommend finding one that is your favorite color and smooth in texture.
A prayer rock is something that can draw your attention to the present moment in time. You begin praying about your day or troubles. It calms you down by surrendering one burden at a time.
It starts to lower your stress level, awakening your eyes to the sparkle of life all around you.
How do you use a prayer rock?
You hold it. I will rub my thumb against its smooth texture on days I’m highly stressed. You pray away your troubles, worries, anxieties allowing space for gratitude to emerge slowly.
“Life won’t sparkle unless you do.”
— Unknown.
The benefits of a prayer rock
The benefits of a prayer rock are a sense of a renewed sparkle in your day. My grandson uses his in a little different way.
One day he was crying in my backseat. I asked him if he would like to hold my happy rock? He was thrilled. I asked him if he felt better, and he said yes as he had it smiling. Peace filled the car as his eyes were even twinkling, or maybe those were a few leftover tears.
The sparkle
I highly recommend having a prayer or happy rock in every vehicle you own. We can tend to spend many hours in our cars alone or with others. Either way, a few prayers never hurt anyone.
Some people keep a prayer rock by their nightstand and use it at bedtime. I’m thinking the more prayer rocks sprinkled around the house, the better.
“So let us begin right now. Let us feed our sparkle and light up our life.”
— Rachel Macy Stafford
Do you suffer from anxiety or panic from being on the road with other drivers? Do you spend a lot of time in the car? Do you think it would be beneficial if you used some of your time in the car to renew your sparkle or someone else’s? Or how about using a prayer rock at bedtime?
I’m writing this story as a thank you note to the little souvenir shop that sold me the simple rock that I named a prayer rock.
I also want to thank Trista Signe Ainsworth for her sparkle-filled publication, Thank You Notes.
Trista shares a weekly writing prompt that is very inspiring. This week I hope you will enjoy stories about, Your Renewed Sparkle.
