A BAD Month Selling Photos / Videos Online

An honest look at how much I make in a bad month selling stock photos and videos — an ordinary guy with a creative side hustle

This month has been a shocker for selling stock photos and video footage.

Curious how bad? I’m going to give you the cold, hard data.

I’ve said it and just about accepted it. Far from being a birthday month celebrated with an abundance of sales, November has been my worst month of 2023.

I sell photography and video footage on a range of different platforms. A side hustle that I enjoy and pays somewhat towards the expense of travelling to nice local places or photography equipment.

The platforms I receive the most frequent sales, resulting in good revenue, are: Alamy, Shutterstock and Adobe Stock.

The Lows

The likes of Dreamstime and Pond5 I tend to have not much luck on. Indeed, my November 2023 earnings from Dreamstime are… $0.35!

What photo earned me that whopping $0.35?

The Highs

So if that was the worst distributor for sales in November 2023, what was my “best” distributor this month? I say “best” because it has not been a good month.

Adobe Stock — here I brought in $35.56. I told you the month didn’t go well.

Of this $35.56, $20.78 came from a single photo. The highlight of the month for Adobe Stock also came from an aerial photo. This time it was a top-down view of a MUGA multi-use games area in Howden, East Yorkshire, taken on a trip to see a friend.

Average Joe

Whilst the previous two highlights have been photos, the highlight this month from Shutterstock is a video sale.

What it does have in common with the previous two is it is yet another aerial image.

This time it is aerial footage ascending over Skelton Lake Services on the M1 near Leeds. Passing by on my way to take photos at a nature reserve, I threw the drone up in the car park and it brought in $11.07 this month.

But what’s the total?

Okay, that’s the worst performing distributor and the best. A middling made up mostly of a video sale. But what’s the total?

So, what’s the grand monthly total from my main distributors of stock imagery?

Well, the not so grand total for November 2023 (minus some tiny amounts from distributors I can’t be bothered to include) is… $68.96.

On the bright side…

If I stop being pessimistic though I have to admit that November’s revenue has covered my Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom subscription for another year (thanks to a good deal!).

Or about 1/11th of the cost of my workhorse drone.

Or in less photographic terms, 11 beers down the local brewery!

So whilst it has been the worst performing month of the year, I can take some positive away from this month by putting that money into perspective. It is, after all, money I wouldn’t have had I not uploaded these images to sell.
