We’re Traveling Around The Alps Without a Plan
It’s going to be an exciting ride
Trains are the best to travel with.
Period.
I’m not starting a discussion about that. Who doesn’t love to sit in a train enjoying beautiful landscape?
We haven’t traveled much since the start of 2020, but I managed to get into places like Brussels and Vienna. But now it’s time to go on a big journey again.
The alps are the place where my sister and I are going at the end of April.
We will travel by trains from the Netherlands and our first stop is Neuhausen am Rheinfall, a beautiful place in Switzerland and very close to the great city of Zürich.
Traveling in Freestyle Mode
As the title suggests, we’re not going to plan much on this journey.
The only thing we’ve planned are our flexible train tickets and our first night in a hotel in Zürich.
When traveling with little to no plans in advance, you gain so much freedom to do whatever you like — we are not bound to one place or hotel to stay in, if we decide to not like where we’re going, we’ll just change the plans.
On forehand, it might seem like it’s going to give massive stress, but in fact, when you’re not expecting a thing from your journey, ‘nothing’ can go wrong.
The worst thing that can happen is that we have to change our plans, which we’re going to do anyway.
10 Locations in 4 Countries
I’ve always wanted to do a week of unlimited train traveling through Central Europe, and we’re finally doing it.
First, we had planned to go at the end of May, but since my school just published a schedule, we had to move it (The advantages of flexible tickets pay off).
We’re going to four different countries: Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany.
The places we’re planning to visit are:
- Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Zürich, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Montreux, Zermatt/Matterhorn, Como, Innsbruck, Hallstatt and München.
I’d love to see the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe, as we’re very close to Zürich and the beautiful blue lakes of Interlaken are literally calling me — plenty of places to explore during that intense week of travel.
By the way: Hallstatt is the town in Austria that Disney’s Frozen is based on — it looks just like Arendelle.
You Better Don’t Pack Too Much
My sister (Sanne) tends to pack too much stuff when going on vacation. Big suitcase with wheels that’s just way too heavy.
I’ve got a backpack prepared for my sister so that she can pack at least what she needs, since a heavy suitcase isn’t very practical when traveling by train all day.
Quick suitcases are much easier.
I usually don’t pack that much, most of it is tech. Things like my laptop, iPad and phone to make sure I’m able to fix anything if needed (And I can create content on the go).
For the rest, I only need a bit of clothes and mostly water bottles.
Tip from me to my fellow travelers: roll your clothing instead of folding — that saves a lot of space.
