Summary

The article reflects on the power of perspective and gratitude through the joyful reaction of children on an airplane.

Abstract

The narrative recounts a personal experience of being stuck on the tarmac after a routine flight, where the author observes three children across the aisle expressing genuine excitement and gratitude simply for being on an airplane and having had a good time. Despite the delay, which caused restlessness among other passengers, the children's proclamation of being "the luckiest kids in the world" serves as a poignant reminder that happiness is not contingent upon circumstances but rather on one's ability to recognize and appreciate the good in any situation. The author contrasts their initial impatience with the children's infectious joy, suggesting that contentment is a matter of perspective and that gratitude can transform even mundane or frustrating experiences into opportunities for happiness.

We’re the Luckiest Kids in the World

A reminder to be grateful

You ever get stuck on the tarmac?

I was flying Southwest, sitting in the very back row. The flight was uneventful. Standard. Watched part of a movie, ate some of the snacks, and looked forward to getting home.

But when we landed we didn’t deplane right away. There was another plane at the gate and it was taking forever. The flight attendants kept telling us to be patient, to stay in our seats until the plane came to a complete stop.

I was getting restless.

But then I heard the kids sitting across the aisle, three of them, yell out in excitement. They were looking out the window (this was after the flight already landed so they were looking at an airport) and laughing. And they kept saying these words:

“We’re the luckiest kids in the world!”

Because they were in an airplane.

Because they were almost home.

Because they had a good time.

We were in the EXACT same circumstance but they had a completely DIFFERENT perspective. The truth is, our happiness isn’t dependent on our circumstances at all. Our joy is determined by our eyes. Can we see the good that’s right in front of us?

Those kids could.

And they showed me the way.
