We’re rivers

The River’s mother

Susurrated to her son:

“Go, go my little one,

All by yourself.”

The River glinted

Proud as can be.

The River’s son

Hummed to the River:

“Look that I’m going,

All by myself!”

The River rippled

And cast his son a rock.

“To keep you grounded,” he gurgled,

“And remind you

That going and steady

Are the same, my son.”

*To my grandfather who taught me that life is beyond death
