Well, It’s Happened Again

Two more students are dead, and I am beyond disgusted with the United States’s government.

I spend quite a bit of time on Facebook. Whether it’s monitoring Dreamers, procrastinating via scrolling, or messaging various people, I’d say time spent there takes up a good 20% of my day.

Today on Facebook, I learned that yet another school shooting has taken place, leaving two dead and several injured.

As soon as I saw the above article, I let my head fall against my desk, muttering, “oh, no.”

I’m not even shocked anymore. It’s happened too many times to cause anything more than anger; which is then quickly followed by profound grief. And then more anger, because I have lost hope that the government will do a damned thing to stop this violence from happening.

Thankfully (and it nauseates me that I even have to say this) the shooter wasn’t armed with a military-grade weapon, just a handgun. So the damage was minimal.

There shouldn’t be any damage AT ALL. Going to school should not pose a risk of getting shot! We tell kids that they need to get an education, but there is no recourse for the trauma they will inevitably be put through if this keeps up.

I’m not even going to comment on the gun control issue. I talked about that in my article about the 20th anniversary of Columbine. What I am going to talk about is what drove this particular student to commit this crime.

We don’t know the details of a motive, and unfortunately we may never know. As of this writing, the shooter is in critical condition after attempting to end their own life by gunshot.

In many cases of school shootings, the perpetrators felt excluded and isolated from their peers, and turned on them in retribution. Others were victims of bullying who had simply had enough. Others still had mental health conditions on top of other factors that led to their horrific acts.

No matter which way you spin it, this is a tragedy. It’s gotten to the point where they why doesn’t matter. It’s gotten to the point where we can’t trust our government to protect kids. It’s gotten to the point where I just want to cry.
