Welcome to the Paradise!

A Story of My Mother’s Home Town

Do you smell the fragrance of ripe Mangoes and Cashew Apples?

Do you feel the freshness of the air combined with the warmth of the sun?

For almost all of us, there’s a place that is dear and near to the heart. For me, it is my mother’s hometown in Yakkala. It’s a city in the Gampaha district, Sri Lanka. Though it’s not a typical rural village it had all the components that I loved the most.

So come with me, I will take you to the village.

The first thing you’ll experience here in the village is love and belonging. My grandmother would feed you to death and my grandfather would trap you in fairy tales Apart from that in the village strangers would talk to you. The conversations would start like,

“Oh you have come to see your grandparents don’t you” And they’ll go on “you know my mother’s father’s younger sister’s husband is your mother’ father’s uncle” They will reveal this unending cycle of relationships and would somehow connect your family to theirs.

The second thing you will see in the village is a natural beauty. There’s crystal clear water for you to swim. You need to learn the art of balancing yourself in the paddy fields. Songs of the birds and murmuring of the trees would mesmerize your soul.

As you enjoy this natural beauty, thirdly you’ll be amazed by the simplicity of the villagers. Their food is not complex yet delicious. Their clothes are not colorful but very clean tidy. Their hopes and aspirations are limited but their lives are the happiest in the world.

Unfortunately, you could experience this lovely journey around the village if you were at my village two decades back.

I wished it was the same for today, but it has changed beyond the words.

If you visit them today. Both my grandparents are long gone. No strangers will talk to you as they are busy with their own. The waterways are polluted and paddy fields are covered with pesticides. The birds are gone and the trees have vanished. They would say you the village has developed and villagers’ lives have improved. But for me, it is always another way around.

But even today, whenever I am down and empty, I’ll go back to the village. I close my eyes and in my imagination, My grandparents are still smiling, the beauty of nature is still preserved and the simple life of the village is still visible.

I try to smell the fragrance of the mangoes and try to feel the freshness of the air. That feeling is soothing and overwhelming and yes, I still see paradise, not in the real world, but in my own imagination. My dear friends hope you enjoy the journey and Welcome to Paradise!
