Welcome to Medium!
What brings you here?
Well first off, it’s an honor to be here doing one of the things that I love most. I have always loved to write, and it’s always been a talent that has come naturally to me. It was never studies or hobbies for me in the past that helped guide me toward my interests. It wasn’t even what others had recommended me that helped either. Instead, I have found everything from simply writing everything on a pen and paper, or by typing up my thoughts of course.
When I was younger, my escape was writing regardless of how I felt at a particular moment. When I was sad, I wrote in a saddened manner, and the struggles that I withstood at the moment. When I was happy, I wrote about the joy I felt, and the degree to which it existed at that. Sometimes I just didn’t feel any particular way, and even with a neutral disposition, I still wrote something. And I wrote in anything I could find from my daily diary to little paper scraps I could scavenge from my desk or drawer.
So that’s sort of why I have come to Medium then before I ramble on too much. I love to write, as I always have for many, many years. Writing isn’t just a talent either, it’s an extension of myself and my very being. When I write, I am able to convey my feelings and my thoughts all in an instant. From there, you the viewer can consider everything that you’ve read and evaluate it accordingly. Your opinion doesn’t have to be at accord with mine, as long as your opinion is your own and not that of someone else.
Now that I’m here, I believe that Medium will allow me to be myself and allow me to do so freely. Whether I should choose to talk about my own perception of things or a belief, Medium won’t judge me poorly. Or let’s say I should decide to write about nature, or my vacation plans, Medium will support me. And the best part is that even if I don’t write at all, Medium will be okay with that as well. I just feel so free here, and if ever there was definition of an independent writer and thinker, this would be it.
You see, Medium is the epicenter of our best interests when it comes to transforming our thoughts to script. We can say whatever we want to, whenever we want too on here. There really isn’t a limit on what is allowed as long as it’s nothing extreme. And should we not know what to say, Medium reassures us that it’s perfectly fine to not say anything at all. It’s like a perfect balance of things, not too large or small, but instead, MEDIUM!
But what is also interesting to me is that there are so many different reasons as to why others come to Medium as well. Of course, there’s the whole concept of getting paid through the Partner Program that motivates a lot of people in and out of itself. Let’s be honest, people need money to get by, and so there are many writers that come to Medium to earn wages for their works. I respect that entirely, and I think that writing is an instrument for you to utilize in a way that suits you best.
And there are many people that make a fortune simply writing articles on a routine basis for Medium. I’m quite sure that many folks have retired from their primary hustles due to Medium, and they are quite content keeping it that way. All the same, I’m sure there are folks that could not endure the waiting game any longer and left the platform only after earning mere cents for their many written works. Medium can be a double-edged sword for some, and I can’t say that I’d be any different if I was here for a paycheck.
And then others have come to Medium just to simply start a publication and lead an army of writers. I have seen many publication owners that rarely if at all, post a written article on their own behalf. Many of them choose to have others write for them, and they earn the notoriety out of it. It can be rewarding for sure, when you see hundreds of articles that were generated thanks to the publication that you birthed on your own.
All the same, everyone does think differently, and sometimes opinions don’t always align. Perhaps you could have a few writers that write in a manner against your best interest. After a few articles of theirs make it to your platform, your authenticity can diminish, and before you know it, you have lost your own publication thanks to others. Again, it’s just that double-edged sword concept of Medium.
But alas, with every sword shines the brightness of the sun on its blade. It glimmers with every last essence and reminds us that writing is what we all share in common. Now consider Medium to be your sword and let yourself decide how you shall use it. Allow yourself to define exactly why you are here.
