Welcome to Alpine, Texas

Where the murals are bright and the homeless are hidden

Welcome to Alpine sign. Photo copyright Julia A. Keirns.

We drove through Alpine, Texas one day and I had to make Rich take me to see the famous Alpine Texas Murals. Other than that we were just on our way through to another place.

We parked in downtown right beside the murals. This mural is on the side of the Kiowa Gallery & Custom Framing building. In this empty lot there is food truck from West Texas Italian Delicacies and Catering, and another mural.

There are picnic tables and it looks like a fun gathering place where people gather to drink and dance and eat. The second mural here is the Julio mural for the month of July. That’s me! My birthday is in July.

These murals are immaculate and wonderfully painted. Just take a few moments to look at them close up and be in awe of the talent.

Across the street was a cute little park where they were advertising the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering. It is going to be held in Alpine on February 17 and 18, 2023. This year Charlie Goodnight is going to be there. His Saturday night show is going to be Charlie Goodnight: His Life in Poetry and Song.

Then as we walked through the little park area, we saw a caboose with another mural painted on it.

Okay, well maybe it isn’t a mural once you get close enough to see it, but it is still a neat painting.

I turned to the right to continue walking through the park and immediately saw it. I am not accustomed to seeing homeless people so it caught me offguard. Rich told me to shush and motioned for me to walk on.

I know nothing about this situation. But seeing it, snapping a photo, and then walking away has bothered me ever since. Should I have went over and said something? The person was completely covered up and hiding. If they had been uncovered and we made eye contact I know I would have went over and asked them what I could do, or if there was something they needed that I could give them. I tell myself they were hiding for a reason. They probably saw us walking through the park before we noticed them.

Moments like this make me thankful for the little bit that we have.
