Welcome – About The Lime Castle

Introduction
I have spent 18 months on Medium and I still haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for.
I read, I clap, I highlight and I comment…but I can’t seem to find the writing that aligns with my tastes.
Don’t get me wrong. I follow and engage with some incredible writers on this platform, but what can I say…my tastes are pretty specific.
What I’m looking for is short stories in the style of magic realism. I’m looking for short-magic.
Here’s a definition of magic realism for those that aren’t acquainted with it.
A literary or artistic genre in which realistic narrative and naturalistic technique are combined with surreal elements of dream or fantasy.
It’s a style where you take your reader into a real world situation, but something in that world is off to reality. There’s something there that’s supernatural, unnatural or surreal.
I have started a publication, and named it The Lime Castle.
The purpose of The Lime Castle is to host a series of writing competitions all geared and creating high quality, short stories that fit the magic realism genre.
The Anchor Object
A competition will be posted to the publication. It will contain within it an “anchor object”. The anchor object will be a physical item that needs to be worked into the story somehow. This object is the anchor that ties together Al of the entries into a particular competition.
General Rules
- Submissions must be 500–1,000 words
- Submissions must fit the definition of magic realism as outlined above
- Submissions must use the anchor object in their story
- Submissions must come with no picture (I want to try make the picture for each submission on DALL E 2 then you can rank my picture matching skills out of 10!)
- Submission can have whatever title they want, but the subtitle of the submission must just be the anchor object in all caps. For example, if the anchor object was “apple”, then a submission for that competition would have a subtitle that just reads “APPLE”
Not a rule, but I would very much love writers to follow The Lime Castle.
Review & Grading
In the first few rounds, I will be the only judge, but will look to assess submissions along the following lines.
- Does the submission follow the rules? If not, the submission can’t be considered.
- How well is the submission written (syntax, use of words, grammar)?
- How engaging is the story itself?
- How creatively does the story incorporate the anchor object?
I am hoping that after a few rounds someone might want to join me as a judge and the winners can be determined by a panel.
Prize Money & Timeline/Duration
The prize money will likely differ for each competition as will the timeline/duration so check the competition announcement post.
I will pin the current competition announcement to The Lime Castle so it’s easy to find.
If you are announced as a winner you will need to set up a PayPal account so that winnings can be deposited.
The intention would be to announce winners 5 days after the competition closes with payment shortly after.
Why Should You Submit?
A bit of fun, not too many words to write, and a chance to pad out your Medium earnings with a little prize.
Support Fellow Writers
Submissions are not judged by claps, comments or highlights, so you can interact with other writers on the publication without fear of lowering your own chances at a trophy.
Be kind, be supportive.
