I decided to start a regular weekly review of my writing on Medium every Saturday morning.

To take the time to understand the stats and the results from the changes I did and also to elaborate on what’s working and what’s not.

And to share some insights and the new things I learned.

To stay organized, I will add these stories to a list, here:

Views and Reads

my monthly views and reads for the current month, as of 24th of Feb’24

What’s the spike from yesterday? It’s the result of implementing the new stuff — read below.

Earnings:

my expected earnings for the current month, as of 24th of Feb’24

Not impressive, I know…that’s one of the reasons why I implement most of the changes — read below.

Followers:

my follower stats for the current month, as of 24th of Feb’24

This number I accumulated by writing from time to time for a year. I was not consistent. I tested and learned. I invested about an year to study successful writers, the algorythim, what works and what doesn’t.

Now it’s time to take it to the next level.

New things I implemented:

Yesterday I decided it’s time to take writing on Medium seriously, as if it is my 9–5. So I dedicate some non-negotiable time to writing.

Content changes:

  • Start writing every day.
  • Focus more on my niche and write more regularly.
  • Start implementing a system I created for writing on Medium (I will share more about it in my future stories).

Personal changes that help me stay focused:

  • Started eating healthier — excluding sugar, milk, flour, rice, and potatoes. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and fiber. Limited coffee and wine (I don’t drink other alcohol). Started skipping meals whenever I could.
  • Started moving more — walking/running two times a week x 5km each day. Chossing the stairs when possible. Walking istead of taking the car when I feel like it.
  • Started waking up early — at 4 or 5 a.m. to dedicate time. Booked this time in the calendar. Learned that this works only if I eat healthy.

The goal: aim for >50% read ratio. Why? Because it is the sign that my content is valuable. But also, it drives engagement and triggers the algorithms on Medium and brings more views and reads, and eventually money.

Top earning story this month:

Read ratio: 66%

The analysis:

I already saw a 49% read ratio for yesterday, when I started implementing the changes. Compared to the 32% on average this month (and previous months), it is progress!

Things I learned this week:

  • Medium is a community. Earnings come from engagement, so if you engage more, you gain more views and reads. As the old saying: “You have to give to receive”
  • To engage: clap and read, but read, with understanding. Comment to contribute to the topic, don’t just say thanks.
  • Engage in the niche you’re writing. Follow a topic, that you use for tagging your stories. Read daily and engage.

Writers that inspired me:

Both managed to get a significant amount of views in a matter of few months. They write about their progress — you might wanna check them out for some more inspiration!

My favorite story from this week:

The bottom line

So far it seems I’m on the right track. Let’s see if it works in the long run. Can’t wait to see the results next week 😄 But before that, I’ve got some work to do…

See you next time! Yana
