Summary

The website content presents a weekly writing challenge themed "Electronic Dance Music versus Country & Western," inviting writers to compose a story inspired by a song from either genre.

Abstract

The article introduces the first weekly writing challenge for March, titled "March to your own Drummer," which prompts participants to write a story based on a song from either Electronic Dance Music (EDM) or Country & Western genres. The challenge encourages creativity by suggesting that the music can serve as a soundtrack to a fictional narrative. Participants are provided with example songs from both genres: an EDM track for those who enjoy a more upbeat, often Sci-Fi-like sound, and a Country & Western song by Reba for a contrasting theme that might evoke stories of romance and heartache. The requirements for the challenge include writing a fictional story between 100 and 1000 words, tagging the story with "EDM" and linking back to the prompt. Writers are also encouraged to share the song that inspired their story.

Opinions

  • The author expresses a personal connection to EDM, acknowledging a shift from a "snobby musical ear" in their youth to enjoying EDM with their daughters.
  • The author admits to limited knowledge of Country & Western music, humorously stereotyping it as involving themes of breakups, stolen pickups, and dogs.
  • A preference for Reba is mentioned, suggesting a soft spot for her music, possibly influenced by the author's mother-in-law's taste.
  • The challenge is presented with flexibility, allowing writers to choose any song from the two genres, demonstrating inclusivity for different musical preferences.
  • The inclusion of a suggested word count and tagging guidelines indicates a structured approach to the writing challenge, aimed at fostering a sense of unity and discoverability among the entries.
  • The author encourages a sensory approach to writing by suggesting "headphones on, eyes closed" to fully immerse in the musical inspiration.
  • A call to support the initiative with a coffee donation implies a community-driven and possibly non-profit nature of the writing prompt platform.

Weekly Prompt: Electronic Dance Music versus Country & Western

You don’t need to dance all night or steal the dog, just write a good story.

Welcome to the first weekly challenge for March, where our theme is March to your own Drummer, a musical challenge to tease our muse onto the dancefloor.

Electronic Dance Music

The noisy dance music of club and music festival life, the soundtrack of my misspent youth. Although my snobby musical ear at that age would not be seen dead dancing to very same commercial tracks my daughters and I now boogie to every morning over our breakfast.

Here’s our favourite morning track as an example, but use your own if you want. EDM lends itself to upbeat stories and the more techno sounding stuff often has a Sci-Fi feel. Let’s see what it inspires for you.

Country & Western

I know absolutely nothing about this genre besides some poor sod is usually being broken up with and she’s stealing his pickup and his dog, too. Poor guy. If EDM is not your thing, this is your fallback option.

My mother-in-law absolutely loved Reba, so that’s what you’re gonna get from me as an example. Songs like this make me think of midwestern romance gone wrong. Let’s see what you do with it.

You don’t need to use either of these songs, just pick your favourite or least hated song from either of these genres and write a story that it inspires.

Headphones on, eyes closed, and go!

Challenge Requirements

Your story must:

  1. Tell us a fictional story inspired by your song choice.
  2. Be min 100 and max 1000 words long, excluding the title, subtitle, and any post-story bio/links. (We use Medium’s own word count feature.)
  3. Use “EDM” as one of your five tags. We recommend Fiction, Flash Fiction and maybe your genre too. But it’s your choice.
  4. Please link back to the prompt so others can find it easily.
  5. Oh, and don’t forget to share your song at the end!
