Weekly Prompt: Character vs Society
You must leave the village to become the One.
Welcome to the second weekly challenge for August, where the theme is Rings of Conflict.
As we said in the Monthly Theme announcement, this month focuses on the interactions between the many forms of conflict. Each week we’ll look at a ring of conflict as they expand outwards and consider its effect on your stories.

You choose the size of your society.
Is your hero infiltrating the pan-galactic Illuminati?
Is the society in your story the secret kind, the one with the handshakes and the rituals and the — oh, I really can’t say you know how it is? Or maybe it’s that group of figures gathering in the deep dark wood up to no good?
Use this generator to get a name to pin all the crimes on to. Or the parties. Select your genre (Contemporary, Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi) and click Generate.
Is Your Hero From a Small Seaside Village?
Do they dream like Rand Al Thor of a wider world? Do they yearn to leave the sleepy little hollow and set foot on dusty paths to the great unknown? Will they be plucked from this idyllic calm and thrust into a world fraught with danger and unimaginable powers battling at scales beyond their wildest meadow daydreams.
Is Your Hero a Street Urchin From an Ash Strewn City?
A city of tenements and narrow twisted and cramped streets of the Skaa slums and avenues leading toward leering noble keeps all bending the knee to the spires of the Lord Ruler’s Palace.
Or do they walk the streets at night like Sam Vimes of the Night Watch, feeling the cobbles through the thin soles of your boots, knowing by their very touch where you are in the tumbledown mess that is Ankh Morpork? Or another bustling place we’ve not yet learned of?
Or perhaps your hero is from one great nation among many. Nations at war or nations at peace. Perhaps they are a stranger in a strange land. Or they feel like an outsider in the land of their birth. Either way, perhaps this is not the place for them.
These are simple one-button generators. Have fun with them but don’t forget the story is what counts. Enjoy how they can stimulate your imagination and push you and your hero into places unexpected.
Pick your favourite, generate a society and take a screenshot and include that in your story. If it’s the secret kind, I understand no photos allowed.
These generators do lean toward the Fantasy genre, but they're just a starting point. You're in charge of the society that antagonises your hero. You decide what is normal, what is not and most importantly what sparks fly as a result.- Perhaps your village is in a rural part of your country or in another a less developed nation. South Africa has plenty rural villages like that.- Maybe your medieval city layout is a fictional town in modern Europe, valuing tradition over change. Or its historic Prague? The point is to think of your character in contest and conflict with the fabric of this society. The generators are just visual prompts. Challenge Requirements
Your story must:
- Use one of these generators to create an image or name for inspiration.
- Include a screenshot for your reader's reference. Unless it’s a secret, then weave the name into your story somehow…
- Be minimum 200 words long and a maximum of 1,000 words, excluding the title, subtitle, and any post-story bio/links. (We use Medium’s own word count feature.)
- Be fictional, even if it includes factual information or concerns.
- Use “Society” as one of your five tags.
“In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
