Weekly Overwatch League Stat Breakdown - Ranking The Top Support Duos (Week 4 Extra)

Introduction

As a supplement to my previous two breakdowns (Week 3: Zenyatta and Week 4: Mercy) - I have decided to create an extra ranking for this week, in which I average out the combined ratings between support players to evaluate the top support duos in the league. The statistics reflected encompass all available data from Overwatch League broadcasts, and in the case of Zenyatta, have been updated to include data from all four weeks of play. Without further ado, the list:

1. New York Excelsior: +54%

Perhaps no players have impressed at their roles more than Jjonak and Ark, and perhaps no where is the synergy between support players more evident — as Jjonak is notoriously the target of Ark’s damage boost.

2. Seoul Dynasty: +50%

Two gods of a bygone meta (Ana + Lucio), but the shift to Zenyatta + Mercy hasn’t slowed them down one bit. Having played together since mid-2016, this duo has built an unmatched level of coordination with one another — why would you ever separate them?

3. Houston Outlaws: +49%

The pride of North America, Houston has started Stage 1 off strong, in no small part to Bani’s exceptional Mercy play. Meanwhile, Rawkus struggles to get the accolades of his Korean counterparts, but has quietly had a very solid season thus far.

4. London Spitfire: +34%

Just one of two separate support duos on this ultra-flexible London squad. In the past week they have been splitting playtime with the former GC Busan duo of Hagopeun and Closer, but I’m not sure you can go wrong with either pair.

5. Boston Uprising: +30%

No strangers to being underestimated, these two players have flown under the radar through the first few weeks - but with their decisive week four wins against both L.A. teams, it’s about time we start to take notice.

6. San Francisco Shock: -11%

There’s a large gap between the top-5 and the bottom-7, starting out with a San Francisco duo where Dhak’s often-criticized performance on Mercy has been elevated by Sleepy’s solid Zenyatta play.

7. Florida Mayhem: -17%

Probably more than any other team, they have struggled with adjusting to the Mercy-meta, as it seems like quite frankly - neither of them wants to play her. Changes in Stage 2 could reinvigorate this duo, as well as this team.

8. Dallas Fuel: -21%

Dallas has made numerous changes to their line-up to attempt to rekindle former glory, with the recent change to consistently keep Harryhook on Zenyatta, but nothing they have tried has seemed to work.

9. Philadelphia Fusion: -22%

Boombox seemed to be a breakout star prior to the start of the Overwatch League, but has statistically been lackluster throughout Stage 1, bringing down Neptuno’s above-average Mercy play.

10. L.A. Gladiators: -32%

The Finnish support duo, formerly of Team Gigantti, have shown high-highs (especially Shaz’s stand-out Zenyatta play), but the extreme inconsistency of this team has also had some very low-lows - ending each week so far with an 0 - 4 blowout.

11. L.A. Valiant: -53%

Inconsistency seems to be a theme in L.A., as it’s other team spent half of the first stage trying to decide which player would play which hero - ultimately leading to neither performing well on either.

12. Shanghai Dragons: -112%

Individually, both players are ranked last at their respective heroes. Their team is ranked last in the league. They’ve struggled in basically every area, but I think their support play has been their biggest weakness.
