PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Week of Wishes

1st Week of December

Wishes of one’s old life wither and shrivel like old leaves if they are not replaced with new wishes when the world changes. And the world always changes. — Catherynne M. Valente

Last week highlighted my waterfront week in San Diego, California. I can barely admit it, but I took 2,316 photos in a week. (In my defense, some were bursts in a series — still maybe too many.)

Now, looking back on that week, I feel like I missed out a little bit on time with the people I went to visit. I walked ahead of the group to find the next photo opportunity. I rushed to catch up after the group got tired of waiting for me to capture each vantage point in its entirety.

I approached the week as an assignment instead of vacation and time with friends and family. I wish I would have balanced a little better.

This week I put down my camera for several days and I have very few pictures. I decided to sprinkle in a few flashbacks.

Day 1

Last year my family didn’t travel so we sent boxes of cheer and started some holiday challenges before December even started. The cover photo is a door swag I made with the greens my mom sent me. I also made these trees below.

This year we haven’t sent any boxes of holiday cheer but our wishes of traveling may come true if things stay as they are right now.

Day 2

One of the challenges we started last year was a list of specific holiday light displays that we would try to capture. We sent pictures across the country as proof. The quest was fun.

I am so far behind this year in my holiday preparations. I do not wish to be the Grinch.

Day 3

In addition to feeling like I let photography steal some of my time with loved ones last week, I also feel a little less awe in the ordinary of my everyday life. I guess that is a repercussion of vacationing in a super awesome setting last week.

I guess it just took a few days to get back in the groove. I took a picture of the sunrise on my way to work. I wished for a clear waterfront view of the sunrise like the ones I experienced last week.

The power of the sun in proximity to the power lines was interesting. It made me think more about the power of wishes, actions, and perspectives.

Day 4

Today I celebrated a wish-come-true day! Rosy Gee’s book arrived in the mail! I had my warm blanket ready to wrap up and sink in. It is so great to see someone's wishes (and hard work) pay off, a feeling of mutida-happiness for her. I am really enjoying the book!

Day 5

I noticed this tree on the left is still celebrating fall and in the fenced area in the background, there are Christmas trees for sale. I also noticed a holly-like tree to the far right, all decked out in red berries for the season.

It’s time to jumpstart my holiday cheer.

Day 6

Better than wishing — I bought some holiday greens and flowers.

It will be fun to decorate a little each evening next week after work. It will pep up my holiday spirit.

I hung the wreath on the door and opened the cinnamon pinecones. It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas already!

Day 7

I started out the week wishing for something to be different about the past week. (Yes, Dr. Phill, I know…How’s that working for you? Not very well! Seems I can’t change the past.)

Then, in the middle of the week, I was wishing to still be on vacation. (Who isn’t?) I was also wishing not to be the Grinch, but I had yet to take any action. Of course, things don’t change without any action, so…I fixed that.

Now, at the end of the week, I found an activity suggested by Kris Bedenian, wishing for the future. I think I will pick one of her ideas and give it a try!
