Week 9: “Sweet Sounds of the ‘70s”

Just Shy of 200 Albums Listened to Out of 1001

The 70s have arrived!

I asked the other Bills what they thought of 70s Bill. Here are their thoughts:

50s Bill:

“I think he should go back to where he came from. He’s too loud, too raucous, and he should learn some manners.”

“I like his vibe, mate, but I do think that sometimes he can be a little abrasive. I like that he sings though. Singing is important, cause it spreads love. Y’know what I mean, mate?”

If you’re interested in watching all the Bills discuss the beginning of 70s albums from the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, check it out here:

Some Takeaways From This Week:

  • Grateful Dead is a band I haven’t really explored, but American Beauty was absolutely fantastic mellow jam band rock. I think it’s what The Band wishes they could do half the time.
  • Van Morrison continues to blow my mind. Moondance is a step up from Astral Weeks, but both show an incredible musicianship and ability to write killer jazzy crooner songs.
  • Soft Machine’s Third is brutal and demands way too much of the listener. I like prog rock and fusion jazz, but I found this to be absolutely atonal and hard to listen to. The fact that it’s a double album makes it even more difficult.
  • I bought the vinyl for Deep Purple’s Deep Purple In Rock on eBay halfway through the album, so that should tell you how good that one is.
  • Stephen Stills’ solo album is top notch. A great range and harder rocking than you’d expect from a man with an acoustic guitar on the cover.
  • I still find Derek and the Dominos Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs to be overrated. Clapton has better albums and ones that are honestly, less problematic.

But You Won’t Find John Lennon’s “Plastic Ono Band” Here…

Expect it to be an album spotlight on Friday! I want to delve in and talk about how John Lennon separates from The Beatles in this album by looking straight through the music at the listener. He’s got stuff to get off his chest and things to say.

Check it out if you want a more deep dive analysis on an album.

But Wait…70s Bill Wanted to Say Something:

“Dude, I just think people should know that the best era of music has arrived. There’s a reason this section is so long in the book. These other two may have had some good albums, but it’s nothing compared to what this era has.”

A bold statement.

We shall see.

Thanks for reading and watching.

Hope that helps.

Love you all.

I’m Bill. I write about music and spirituality.

I’m listening to 1001 Must-Hear Albums Before You Die in a Year and documenting it on Youtube.
