Summary

"Wear My Crown" is a poetic narrative exploring themes of transformation, struggle, and redemption, as the protagonist, The Gorgeous Mess, grapples with temptation, addiction, and disillusionment with fairytale ideals, ultimately choosing authenticity over a flawed crown.

Abstract

The poem "Wear My Crown" delves into the journey of self-discovery and the rejection of societal expectations. It begins with the introduction of Kira Dawn, also known as The Gorgeous Mess, who acknowledges the presence of a new villain in town, symbolizing the internal and external challenges that turn happiness into sorrow. The protagonist reflects on past mistakes, including succumbing to temptation and selling her soul, which was not her intention. The narrative touches on the struggles with addiction, represented by a needle and a burnt spoon, and the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of despair. The character despises the illusion of perfection, as represented by Alice from Wonderland, who is lost without her looking glass. The poem criticizes the unrealistic standards of fairytales, suggesting that even classic characters like Sleeping Beauty face unspoken hardships. The Gorgeous Mess eventually finds Kira and achieves sobriety, realizing that the true beauty lies in embracing one's imperfections. The protagonist sheds the metaphorical crown, preferring a genuine, messy existence over a polished facade, symbolized by a pair of Chuck Taylor sneakers.

Opinions

  • The author conveys a strong disdain for the deceptive allure of happiness and perfection, as represented by the snake's hiss and Alice's Wonderland.
  • There is a sense of regret and recognition of past errors, particularly in the pursuit of fleeting pleasures that led to a metaphorical loss of the soul.
  • The poem expresses the painful reality of addiction, describing it as a form of enslavement and a lethal combination.
  • The protagonist's journey reflects a critique of fairytale narratives, which often omit the complexities and struggles of real life.
  • The transformation from a life of excess and illusion to one of authenticity and sobriety is portrayed as a courageous and necessary choice.
  • The poem suggests that true strength and beauty are found in vulnerability and the acceptance of one's flaws, rather than in the pursuit of an unattainable ideal.

Wear My Crown

World Upside Down

New Villain in Town

Here to turn the universe

Upside Down

Smiles turn

Into Frowns

I can bring you happiness

Says the snake with a two-forked hiss

Believe the lie

Stop to cry

I just sold my soul

That was not my intention

Wasn’t my goal

Temptation lying in hidden cracks

Life becomes an arm of tracks

This is a poem about the past

The Mess is now out of whack

Trying so hard to get Kira back

With each new track I run

I need more and more

This is no fun

Find myself slave to a needle

A burnt spoon

Combination lethal

I cry out from the pitch black room

I can feel evil there

The devil looms

I look over and I see Alice

Wonderland is off kilter

It’s off balance

I despise Alice to the core

At least down the rabbit hole

She has got more

I have been running track now for awhile

Running like it’s going out of style

This is meant to be a vicious cycle

Alice? Where is your looking glass?

“I have lost it.” She replies

Fire and fury fill my eyes

I was pushed into her world

The real fairytale endings

Never are told

Even Sleeping Beauty

Couldn’t catch a break

She was sleeping with her powder on a plate

I slap her silly

Only way to wake her

The beauty looks hungover.

The Gorgeous Mess finds Kira

She gets sober.

I’m exposing fairytales lie

Hoping another life won’t die

Take off my crown

Set it down

I rather be the shaky gorgeous mess in a ripped gown

Pair of Chuck Taylor’s

Sneakers that rock

This is how I have turned back the clock.
