We Won’t Stay Down

Credit: Pedro Figueras, Pexels

The one-eyed fighter prepares for his fight He’s got to get back to the ring The wing-less pigeon flaps through the night She is sure she’ll fly by morning That beggar kid with his broken limb does Skip with a skippin’ rope in hand And the girls who’ve been violated so They know they’ve got some place to go.

Since the hurricane hit this little town And they left all but broken down Saplings grow from little cracks in the ground They all scream, “We will not stay down.”

We won’t stay down, we won’t stay down We won’t stay down, my friend We won’t stay down, we won’t stay down We won’t stay down today.

The friendless tramp speaks to people on the road She knows one o’ them will reply The widowed wife wipes her drippin’ tears now She knows there’s no point in crying. They drop their guns and they pick up the pen They sing songs of war but no more Been a long long time since it all began Seems almost like the days of yore.

Since the tempest raged over this small town All that it left was broken glass But the tables have shifted now For the people wake up at last.

We won’t stay down, we won’t stay down We won’t stay down my friend They know not yet what we are made of For only the black clouds bring rain.

The vomiting patients in their own beds They get up, wash their dirty faces And the field that’s been covered with shrapnel Now is starting to host races They who had their faces concealed in cloth They who disseminated wrath They all pick up their broken pieces now They are getting stronger at last.

Since the floods had gulped this little town here They all thought that the end was near Yet the waters taught them to stay afloat So much pain, now nothing they fear.

We won’t stay down, we won’t stay down We won’t stay down my friend Now that we’ve learnt how to get up and run We know none of this is the end.
