We Were Taught
A poem
It seems before we were so alike when both of us, free lept like stallions barefoot in the summer breeze.
But once the trees lost their leaves we took the same bus to different schools.
You learned to shine like our bright smiling sun to take all that you want and leave no race unrun.
I was taught to give my shine away to offer pieces of me as gifts to the world
Memories from our youth swim under your skin. You’ve changed, my friend but the person within is the same little boy who wept for the flowers and I’m still a little girl afraid of her powers.
