We Need to Follow Europe’s Decision to Ban Titanium Dioxide in Food
Why this additive is “no longer considered safe.”
A full ban on titanium dioxide as a food additive begins August 7, 2022, in the European Union.
The purpose of this additive is to enhance and brighten the color of white foods such as milk, candy, snacks, sauces, etc.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers titanium dioxide as, “no longer considered safe when used as a food additive.”
This is due to concerns regarding its genotoxicity, the ability of a substance to damage DNA. If a substance damages DNA and creates mutations, then cancer may develop.
The EFSA scientists conclude titanium dioxide potentially poses a threat to the genetic material of cells. Researchers say,
“After oral ingestion, the absorption of titanium dioxide particles is low, but they can accumulate in the body. This, together with a lack of data, meant the panel could not conclude on the safety of TiO2 for animals, consumers and the environment. Regarding user safety, titanium dioxide is considered potentially carcinogenic by inhalation”
The EU is making the smart decision — banning titanium dioxide before it causes a rise in cancer. Other countries, like the U.S., must follow their lead and proactively take steps to decrease the cancer pandemic.
Thank you for taking the time to read my article. This intention of this article is to spread awareness about something I find socially unjust — companies using cheaper chemicals to make higher profits. In my opinion, white coloring just isn’t worth it. What are your thoughts on this issue?
