Summary

Climbers Paul and Nia, confident in their abilities, attempt a dangerous jump across a wide cavern on a mountain despite warnings and worsening conditions, leading to a tragic fall.

Abstract

Paul and Nia, experienced climbers and partners, face the challenging Jagger's Pass on their ascent. Despite Nia's knowledge of the thinning air and Paul's realization of their delayed climb, they press on without proper safety gear, driven by their confidence and previous successful jumps. As they approach the daunting cavern, they regret not heeding the advice to use ropes and harnesses. With the wind picking up, they make the fateful decision to jump, acknowledging the risk but choosing to face it together. In a poignant moment before the leap, they express their love and deep connection, accepting their fate as they fall to their doom.

We Have Plenty of Time

We were never going to make it

As Paul took Nia’s hand, he smiled as best he could, but she could see his lips trembling. “We have plenty of time” Paul said. Nia knew they had been on the mountain too long and that the air was only getting thinner as they climbed. If they could just make it to the next base camp, they would be okay.

She smiled back at Paul and up the mountain they went. Jagger’s Pass was the most difficult part of the climb. It required them to almost jump across a wide cavern to get to the other side and then on to base camp. They’d practiced this jump several times, but not under conditions like this.

As they began their climb, Paul remembered the first day at Gate Mountain, when he met her. Nia was the first woman climber he’d ever seen in person. Not because they didn’t exist, but free handed climbing was not for the faint of heart. He remembered watching her with awe as she moved quickly up a mountain that most men would have been afraid to tackle.

He met her at the top and that’s the moment he knew she was the one. From that day forward, they climbed together. Always checking on each other and ensuring they were being safe. As he looked at her now, he was saddened that he didn’t pay enough attention to the time or the weather reports.

As they moved steadily up the Mountain, they could see the beginning of the wide cavern. In a few minutes they would have no choice, but to try to make the jump. Being as egotistical as they both were, they ignored the camp leader’s advice to bring ropes and harnesses. They thought only a newby would make it this far and then have to resort to safety measures.

As they looked at each other, the wish they’d listened to the warning. As they got closer to the cavern, the wind picked up. As always Paul would go first and then be on the other side to guide Nia’s jump. When they arrived at the jump off point, they held each other close.

“I love you so much” Paul said “You are the best thing that ever happened to me. I was lost before I found you.” And then he began to tear up. Nia, wasn’t having that. She simply said “Ditto!!” Now it was time and there was no going back.

The ledge that they were on didn’t give them much room to make a running jump, but they’d done this before. For some reason, this cavern seemed wider than what they’d seen on the map and the videos. Nia’s heart began to race. For the first time in her life, she felt fear.

Paul moved back a far as he could, winked his eye at her and took a running leap. Nia, screamed his name as soon as he was in the air. She knew he couldn’t get to the other side. She ran after him and jumped as well. As they began their fall, she screamed “We were never going to make it, but at least we are togeth…..”
