We are all the culprits and the fixers

One more time we see Facebook being exclusively blamed for all our actions on this platform. Is it true our bad, good, or neutral behavior on Facebook is Facebook’s fault? Is it true we have no power with respect to Facebook?

Information is power.

Self-control and critical thinking are gold.

Facebook (FB) provides us with information and the opportunity to practice self-control and critical thinking every time we log on.

I found out that Democrats are communists and pedophiles on Facebook. I don’t believe those things, but I try to speak with individuals influenced by these assertions who share supporting videos, podcasts, memes, and texts. I am learning to ask questions instead of seeing someone as a cardboard cut out if I disagree with them.

In the deeps of a life-sucking depression, my life was saved by the love and tough love of friends and family via FB messages and comments.

An acquaintance passed on information that God set California on fire because that state is for pedophilia. We no longer speak after we bungled our interaction.

I have daily contact with colleagues, friends, and family scattered over the globe that keep me going in the face of 2020’s supreme danger and weirdness.

I have been threatened with physical violence by a stranger who used FB messenger to deliver his message, but I blocked him and am done with that scary moment.

I just had a discussion with a libertarian economics enthusiast. I am a left-leaning Centrist. We initially collided over an internet meme that stated you can’t be a billionaire without being evil. We asked questions and eventually found common ground. Like everyone, billionaires are people too, some good, some neutral, some evil.

As for Facebook, it’s business model takes the freely given attention of billions of people but keeps the profits from this attention for itself and does not compensate us for our labor on its behalf. But,

I get to talk to my friends, colleagues, and family for free and instantly. My friends mark themselves as safe during various disasters, and I am relieved. My FB friends keep me going.

FB is a double-edged sword, as most things humans do are.

Can laws force this behemoth to mitigate the negative and improve the positive actions of Facebook consumers?

Could we all become better communicators by observing ourselves and others as we use Facebook?

Sure.

We can all choose to learn from what we do on Facebook and become smarter, more skilled people.

Facebook is doing its part.

We have to do ours. Let’s get started, one engagement at a time.
