(AUDIO) BOOK REVIEW

We All Make The Occasional Bad Choice In Life

Book Review: A Killer’s Wife by Victor Methos

I am old enough to look back on the bigger part of my life and acknowledge the bad choices I have made. One of my deep beliefs is that none of us can go through life without making mistakes; without choosing for things that only years later we realize weren’t as good as we believed at that moment.

Sometimes those bad choices were because of outside influences because other people have forced us into a situation where we thought we made a good choice, but in hindsight, it wasn’t. Other times we were too immature to make a proper choice, or we just refused to listen to advice. And sometimes, a bad choice just happens to us, because people or situations around us are not what we believe them to be.

Whatever the reason, bad choices in life happen to all of us, and we have to live with them.

The book, A Killer’s Wife by Victor Methos, sparked those thoughts in me.

About the author, Victor Methos

At nine years old, Victor Methos immigrated to the United States from Kabul, Afghanistan, where he was born. He was ten when he wrote his first story in English.

When he was thirteen, a friend of Victor Methos admitted to a crime he hadn’t committed after being interrogated by the police for over eight hours. That was when this author knew he wanted to be a lawyer.

He graduated law at the University of Utah, and went to work as a prosecutor in Salt Lake City, before founding his own law firm, which became the most successful criminal defense firm in Utah. In ten years, Victor Methos conducted over 100 trials, ranging from death penalty cases to defending the rights of Native American tribes to freely practice their religion, and even suing police departments for civil rights violations.

One particular case stuck with Methos — a father who had shot his daughter’s rapists — and he knew he had to write about it. It was the inspiration for his first bestseller, The Neon Lawyer. Since then, the author stuck with legal thrillers and mysteries, and releases about two books a year in this genre.

Besides writing, Victor Methos still works full-time as a lawyer.

More about the book, A Killer’s Wife

This is the blurb:

Fourteen years ago, prosecutor Jessica Yardley’s husband went to prison for a series of brutal murders. She’s finally created a life with her daughter and is a well-respected attorney. She’s moving on. But when a new rash of homicides has her ex-husband, Eddie, written all over them — the nightmares of her past come back to life.

The FBI asks Jessica to get involved in the hunt for this copycat killer — which means visiting her ex and collaborating with the man who tore her life apart.

As the copycat’s motives become clearer, the new life Jessica created for herself gets darker. She must ask herself who she can trust and if she’s capable of stopping the killer — a man whose every crime is a bloody valentine from a twisted mastermind she’s afraid she may never escape.

Mixed feelings about this book

I enjoyed listening to this book, and because of that, I will probably — sometime in the future — listen to another book by Victor Methos.

However, there are some things in the book which bothered me. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but for a person to get into the same situation twice seems unlikely, especially this kind of thing. Then again, I could sympathize with the main character, Jessica Yardley, because the second time it happened, they had gravely deceived her. Cryptic, I know, but if you want to know more, you’ll have to read the book.

Another thing in the book is the way the daughter of Jessica is portrayed. She’s a brilliant fifteen-year-old, but also does things that don’t befit such a clever person. Where it niggled me some, I brushed it off as her just being a teenager.

As I said, I enjoyed the listen, but not enough to immediately seek out another book by Victor Methos.
