Way After Dark

A Poem for #Starlight Prompts, #Lodestar Gazette and Jessica's Quill

Image created by Jessica’s Quill for Week 3 Starlight Prompt

Sitting stoically on his steed

Sits confidently he will find his way

Way above the starlit night

Way beyond the heaven’s gate

Gate in the distance of cemetery field

Gate of thorns and thistles dead

Dead are the villagers in this rotting place

Dead are their hopes and dreams alive

Alive are the woodland creatures cloaked in darkness

Alive is the wind and light of the moon

Moon silver and full

Moon light so quiet

Quiet as death and pale

Quiet is his steed that gallops at night

Night beckons the specter to guard his flock

Night terrors made of Starlight visions as these

These gestures of duty and responsibility alike

These poor dead folks are left quite alone

Alone in the dark

Alone without care

Care naught forgotten for this pale night rider

Care given kindly to watch over their souls

Souls might not see heaven

Souls might not see down

Down are the tree roots

Down are the stones with names

Names never mentioned

Names long forgotten

Forgotten by loved ones

Forgotten by dreams

Dreams full of promise

Dreams full of peace

Peace now forever holds

Peace comes with a price

Price dooms forever

Price without purpose in death

Death comes to all

Death and taxes are certain

Certain is the moon at night

Certain is the crisp air tonight

Tonight he mounted his majestically steed

Tonight they observe the graves so worn

Worn lacking care and tending deserved

Worn out bases of crumbling stone

Stone and earth is abundant

Stone appears dusty in the pale silver moon

Moon dust they call it

Moon shadows in dark

Dark ruts in brown soil

Moss mixed with soil

Pale night rider slips into the dark

Wow, that is not easy to do! Thank you, #Jessica’s Quill for tweaking my imagination. If you would like to leave a comment and perhaps staying on this poem for at least 30 seconds, it will help buy catnip for my old pussycat.
