Opinions

  • The author portrays the woman's initial act of infidelity as a catalyst for the subsequent series of events, suggesting a cause-and-effect dynamic in the relationship.
  • The narrative conveys a sense of dramatic irony as the woman's unexpected appearance at the party reveals not only her partner's betrayal but also a calculated act of revenge.
  • The woman's refusal to accept defeat and her determination to outdo her partner's actions reflect a competitive and combative view of love and relationships.
  • The author implies that both individuals were deeply in love but also deeply flawed, engaging in a destructive cycle of retaliation rather than reconciliation.
  • The conclusion of the story suggests that the couple's youth and immaturity contributed to their inability to resolve their issues constructively, emphasizing personal growth as a result of their tumultuous experiences.

Watching Him Kiss Another Woman

When love turns into war

They had been so crazy in love. She had no idea how crazy it would get. She thought that she had lost him when she slept with his best friend. She was afraid that she had gone too far.

After not talking to him for several days and after learning that he was throwing himself a birthday party — and that she was not invited — she figured he was getting even with her. That’s why she showed up to the party anyway.

She sneaked around to the back and hid behind the bushes. Amazed by how many people were there, she realized that he was pulling out all the stops. As she surveyed the pool party she could not spot him. Taking a deep breath, she decided to step out from behind the bushes and walk right into the party.

As the party-goers spotted her with a giant smile on her face they froze, their eyes opened wide and jaws dropped. Those dancing stopped and stared at her. She obviously was not expected to be there. And apparently everyone knew of her indiscretion. But she sensed that they also knew something else that she did not.

As the party came to a standstill she walked throughout the crowd — much like she used to walk down the runway in her modeling days. But she did not see him. Then she spotted a flagstone walkway leading off from the pool area. She felt suddenly sure that it would lead her to him.

Leaving the lights of the party, she took that path and soon came to a small patio where she saw him. He was in a very tight embrace with a woman and they were kissing very passionately. She stood there and watched them kissing for a long time. All the memories of kissing him herself rose to the surface. She remembered their first kiss, their wedding night, and so much love-making they had shared. And now his mouth was in the mouth of another woman.

Finally, they stopped kissing and they both turned to look at her. That is when she realized the other woman was the girlfriend of his best friend. She suddenly realized that he was not only getting back at her but also at his best friend.

She kept staring into his eyes as he stared into hers. Not a word was spoken and not a muscle on either of their faces moved. She could feel that both of their hearts were crumbling.

Finally, she turned and walked away.

It should have been the end. At home — the home they used to share — she cried for a very long time. If she had any sense she would have realized that it was all over. But she refused to go down in defeat. She would not lose the war she started. She loved him too much. When the crying finally subsided all she could think about was how she could outdo what she had just witnessed. How could she get back at him? She had made a reckless bet and he matched it and raised the stakes. She simply could not fold. She had to win.

The war between them continued for another year and reached ridiculous proportions. Finally, they were both so exhausted that they mutually called it off and went their separate ways never to see each other again.

They were young and stupid and in love — or so they thought. They were both participants in a war that each of them were fighting within themselves. Though battle-scarred, luckily they still had the rest of their lives to find the peace of real love; both within themselves and with another.
