Designed and built by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, the temple is known for its striking white architecture and detailed artwork. The temple consists of several buildings, all colored white and adorned with shiny, golden details and ornaments. One of the most striking buildings is the main temple, which is crowned by nine spires and forms the center of the temple. The interior of the main temple is filled with works of art, including murals, statues, and mosaics depicting Buddhist teachings.
Wat Rong Khun Temple is a temple that can impress you with its beauty no matter what religion or nationality you are. The embroidery and symbols on this temple, which was built in white to be different from other classical temples, are quite interesting. To enter this stunningly beautiful temple, you first pass through the Life Cycle Bridge. The hands protruding from the ground under this bridge symbolize the endless desires of mankind. After the bridge, two human-like figures at the entrance of Heaven’s Gate attract attention. These belong to Rahu, who symbolizes death according to Indian Mythology.
There are beautiful murals (frescoes) on the walls surrounding the Buddha statue inside the temple. These wall paintings depicting Buddha from Nirvana, have sections describing Buddha’s struggle with the devil. In addition to religious drawings, various movie heroes are also included in the murals. The garden around the temple and the different designs in this garden are at least as interesting as the temple. From the toilets designed using gold plating and gold paint, to the wishing pool; Everywhere you look, from the cut heads in the trees to the superhero statue sitting on a bench, you come across another interesting thing.
The architect of this beautiful temple, Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, has promised himself to become the greatest artist of modern Thai arts. After crowning his classical Thai arts education with an award, he built the Wat Rong Khun Temple in order to present the most beautiful temple in the world to the city where he was born. He devoted his life to this project to make Thai Buddhist art popular around the world and attract visitors from all over the world like the Taj Mahal. He refused financial aid from the wealthy or politicians to be free in his ideas and the design of the temple. He would visit the temple twice a day, morning and evening, to check on the work. This interesting architect, who was constantly renovating the temple and said that the project would take 100 years to complete, was giving lectures to students so that the project would continue after him.
Wat Rong Khun is a popular tourist destination and is visited by many people from all over the world who want to admire the temple’s beauty and artistic expression. It is also an important spiritual site for the Buddhist communities in the region.
