Waste To Wonder: A Park with A Difference

A place for everyone to visit and learn how waste material is turned into beautiful replicas of special monuments

Author’s own picture from the visit to the park

A few days ago, I decided to visit the Waste to Art Park with a friend. It is situated at Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi. There is a lot to learn from some of these parks as they are not only beautiful but educational also.

This is now called the Waste to Wonders Park. Seven Monuments have been selected from all over the world and their replicas have been made out of waste material.

As you enter, you are greeted with a gate on which is inscribed The Seven Wonders of the World.

The place was spic and span and very green. It was quiet and peaceful. The plants were healthy. The air was clean and you felt very welcome when you entered it.

It starts with the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, then the Leaning Tower of Pisa Italy Eiffel Tower (France), Colosseum (Italy), Taj Mahal (India), Christ the Redeemer (Brazil), and Statue of Liberty (USA).

The seven wonders have been created in a 5 acres area like a beautiful park out of 150 tonnes of scrap material of automobile parts, trucks, and bus sheets have been used. Other metal waste like fans, rods, iron sheets, nut- bolts, bicycle, and bike parts, and old domestic appliances that have no use to people are also used.

These were all in original metallic color. The real, original Taj Mahal in Agra is made of pure white dazzling marble but this is dark metallic. What is the reason for this we wondered?

The reason is that originally the planners had thought of painting and polishing the monuments to look like exact replicas of the original monuments selected from all over the world.

Somehow they felt that it will not give the look of metal and scrap from where the monuments were actually created. They decided to have the original metallic look.

A very notable thing about this park was that every monument had its own enclosure. It was filled with green plants that were well pruned. Each monument had a special place of its own from where you cannot see the other monument.

Some of the trees were really very old and very well maintained. The banyan trees were over a hundred years and it was interesting to see the long roots of these trees.

The takeaways from this theme park:

#1. A sustainable environment can be maintained if we use waste effectively. We can find better ways to utilize the scrap, we must learn and pass on the message so that metal waste does not harm the environment.

#2. When we make something special we should give each of the things the place that they deserve. In this park, each monument is separated from the other in a manner that you cannot see the next unless you especially walk up and go to the next monument.

#3. The green environment, well pruned and well kept maintains the peace and beauty of the place. The wonderful trees are natural healers and you are transported in a world of beauty.

#4. It is not necessary to paint and polish and modernize everything. Some things look good the way they are. The scrap and metal look beautiful in the monuments. Seeing is believing!
