Was it the Castor Oil That Made the Difference
A recent eye exam gave both me and my eye doctor a starling discovery
Disclaimer: I am not advocating for anyone to try this. Certain eye diseases and other factors may not respond well to this practice and doing this is not recommended by the FDA. Always consult your eye doctor before putting anything in your eyes.
There was a natural cure-craze going around months ago that I read about with a lot of skepticism.
Now keep in mind my last job was working as an optician for two eye docs. Because of this I’m very aware we shouldn’t put anything in our eyes that isn’t sanctioned, or prescribed by a doctor.
However the article stated that putting drops of organic Castor oil in our eyes is a healthy practice. Especially for people who have chronic dry eye syndrome — like me. It also said that cataracts could be dissolved by doing this so I decided to give it a try.
Like many seniors I was diagnosed with dry eye syndrome when I was in my late 60’s. I’m 73 now and years ago I decided to forego the prescription eye drops after a visit to a Walgreen’s pharmacist showed me how expensive they are. * The current price for the most widely used drops for 30 days of Restasis, is $389.99 per the Walgreen’s I use. I also learned that Medicare nor my supplemental insurance would cover the cost — Isn’t that the way it goes?
Since then I’ve been using OTC (over the counter) eye drops almost every day, but they’re a hassle to put in every few hours. I also don’t like how they wreck havoc on what little eye make up I wear. And lastly I don’t think they help my dry eyes that much.
Because for years I have visited holistic, naturopathic doctors I believe I’m more open to trying natural cures than most people, so I decided to try the Castor oil drops. The articles I read all said that it’s most beneficial to put in 1–2 drops in each eye right before bed time, so I started doing this every other night. It was recommended to do it every night, but like I said I’m skeptical.
I started doing this back in June which marked nine month since I’d had cataract surgery in one of my eyes. I saw my eye doc a few months after the surgery so I know my eyes are totally healthy otherwise. As far as helping my dry eyes, I have to say yes the drops helped with this.
Yesterday I went back to my eye doctor for my yearly exam and I became concerned when she kept looking very closely at the eye that still has a cataract. When I asked if something was wrong, she said, “oh no. I’m just checking your cataracts which — seem to be improved from a year ago!”
Then she added that the cataract wasn’t ready to be removed after all which contradicts what she said a year ago. I could tell she was a little surprised so I knew it was time for me to confess that I’d been using Organic Castor oil drops in both my eyes at bedtime every other night. Although she then looked non-plused she said, “why I can’t condone that, I can’t argue with what I’m seeing. Your cataract has shrunk from a category 2 to a 1 so it’s no longer ready to be removed, unless you want to pay for the surgery out of pocket. It has to be a stage 2 or higher before insurance will pay for the surgery.” I assured her I wasn’t going to have the surgery now.
So, did the Castor Oil drops make the difference — What do you think? I can’t think of any other reason why the cataract seems to be dissolving and my eye doctor couldn’t explain it either.
Thank you for reading and thoughtful writing everyone.
