Book Review: The Cabin on Souder Hill by Lonnie Busch

I enjoy reading fantasy stories, and I like it even more when a bit of supernatural is mixed into normal daily life.

Another thing that intrigues me is parallel universes. Remember the series Fringe? I absolutely loved it! The idea of several universes existing next to each other fascinates me, especially the idea that the life of seemingly the same person can be totally different because of the choices they made.

Wonderful stuff.

Reading the book The Cabin on Souder Hill by Lonnie Busch made me think of parallel universes and the supernatural, and Fringe!

The author, Lonnie Busch

Not only a writer but also a painter, animator, and illustrator, Lonnie Busch was born in St. Louis, Missouri, The United States.

This author has won awards for his writing, which has appeared in Southwest Review, The Minnesota Review, The Baltimore Review, and other literary magazines. He won the Clay Reynolds Novella Prize (for Turnback Creek, a novella) and was a finalist for the Tobias Wolff Award for Fiction, the Glimmer Train Very Short Fiction Award, and others.

Blackstone Publishing published Lonnie Busch’s first novel, The Cabin On Souder Hill, in September 2020, and his second novel, The Baldwin Hotel saw the light of day on 17 December 2022.

The creativity of Busch can be seen in the artwork he has created for many corporations, ad agencies, and institutions, including the “Greetings from America” stamps and “Wonders of America” for the USPS.

Colorful characters

With their marriage on the brink of ending, Michelle and Cliff Stage have bought an isolated vacation cabin in the mountains of North Carolina, hoping to repair the damage.

One night Cliff disappears while trying to find the source of a mysterious light in the woods. He doesn’t return, and when the sheriff cannot find him either, Michelle follows the path down the same mountainside, with only the beckoning light as her guide.

There she finds a cabin identical to theirs, and Cliff is a kind and considerate man, instead of a manipulative womanizer. He tells her their daughter is dead, but Michelle has spoken to Cassie only hours before. Michelle cannot accept her daughter is gone, not even when she sees her grave.

The only way for Michelle to get her life and daughter back is to unravel the mystery of Pink, a real estate agent and the man who has years earlier built the cabin the couple has bought. Rumors go around that Pink has killed his wife and buried her on the property, then vanished, but in Michelle’s reality, both Pink and his wife are still alive.

A damn good read

This story is intriguing, and you have shouldn’t let your mind wander, because then you lose the thread of the story.
