Was Elon Musk Right To Fire His Assistant Who Asked For A Raise?
We all might have heard this crazy story of Elon Musk’s loyal assistant of 12 years who was fired for asking for a raise.
Mary Beth had been working for Elon Musk for over a decade. One can only imagine the hours and workload she had to get through to facilitate the smooth running of Musk’s various businesses and personal activities.
After being confident about her value to the company and to the man himself, she approached Musk with a proposal for an increased salary that matched the level of other top executives in the company.
Musk asked her to go on a two weeks vacation as he looked into the matter to figure out whether she was actually needed in the company.
When she came back, according to Musk, she was offered a different job with the same pay within the company. According to Mary Beth however, Musk claimed she was not indispensable to him or his companies and was fired. Her generalist role was shared among several different specialists.
"Mary Beth was an amazing assistant for over 10 years, but as company complexity grew, the role required several specialists vs one generalist," Musk tweeted in response to the story. “MB was given 52 weeks of salary and stock in appreciation for her great contribution and left to join a small firm, once again as a generalist."
Was Elon Musk right to do so?
Many people were left torn to Musk’s reaction to his assistant asking for a raise.
Firstly, every employee holds the right to ask for a raise. Therefore Mary Beth was within her rights to do so.
Secondly, Elon Musk is a very wealthy man. And his companies are very successful. He sure could afford to give his assistant the raise she was asking for whether in part or in full.
Thirdly, Mary Beth had been working for Musk for over a decade, it seemed disloyal for Musk to fire her at her time of need and request while she had been at his loyal service for so long. It’s as though he didn’t care about the decade long work relationship they had built so far. It’s as though her contribution to his success that far was meaningless to him.
Fourthly, it would have been much easier to offer Mary Beth part or the full raise she was asking for than to go out and hire and train several people to replace her.
Other people were quick to point out Mary Beth’s fault in the matter. Why hadn’t she asked for a raise after so many years? And why did she allow herself to go undervalued and underappreciated for so long?
Also, after working for Musk for so long, how could she not predict his reaction to her asking him for a raise?
I feel Musk was on the wrong to fire his loyal assistant for asking for a raise.
The very fact that he hired several other people to do her job meant that the role was vital for him and his companies. Some or more people needed to do it. He just didn’t want Mary Beth to continue with the role.
His firing her for it was a narcissistic power move partly fuelled by emotion more than reason. Like how dare she?
Musk also choose business over building relationships. He wanted the job done because it needed to be done just not by that assistant of 12 years that had just asked for a raise.
Again, working as an assistant for top executives such as Elon Musk is a highly demanding job. And for these, employees at the calibre of Mary Beth are usually very well compensated consumerate to the demands of the job.
When commenting on the matter Musk’s ex-wife Justine empathised with Mary Beth’s situation. She mentioned the valuable role she had played for Musk and his companies over the years. She also shared that Musk had exhibited similar behaviour in their marriage where he insinuated that she was not indispensable to him.
It seems Musk has a habit of choosing to quickly move on, particularly when he feels cornered in his personal or business relationships.
Even as he chooses to make tough life and business decisions, it would be advisable that he also takes the time to value people and the relationships they might have built over the years.
Musk shouldn’t have fired or replaced his assistant simply because she asked for a raise.
