Warning-Covid Is Not Over

Just When We Thought It Was Safe, New Variant Slams US

Just when we thought the covid 19 virus was over or at least moving into the endemic stage, a new variant has raised its ugly head. Have you heard about it? Are you even aware of its existence? Called BA5, this new strain of the virus has been sneaking into our lives. In some ways, it is worse than the original Omicron virus, although definitely not as deadly.

It is catching people by surprise, and cases are surging globally. In the United States, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) estimates roughly half of all new cases of covid are being caused by this new variant. In my own apartment complex, 4 of the 12 units have become infected with it in the last week.

The new Omicron BA5 variant is especially dangerous because it is much more contagious than earlier versions since previous vaccinations have little effect on stopping it.

In addition, people who caught the original covid and survived felt a sense of immunity from catching it again. But the new BA5 variant is also infecting them as well. It seems nobody is safe.

This all shocked me, but I should have known better. First of all, I was fully vaxed up, all 4 shots, and felt relatively safe. But back in May, my daughter in Seattle and her whole household, her, her son, and her mother all caught this new version.

They were all fully vaxed too. Ironically, they all caught it from her sister, who was visiting for Mother’s Day. That was my first inkling something was wrong,

When my neighbors warned me to stay away this week, I took the at-home test and I tested Negative, but my neighbors were all shocked and surprised to have caught the virus after all this time. All of my neighbors were also fully vaccinated, the regular 2 shots plus 2 boosters from Pfizer or Moderna, yet they still caught the BA5 virus.

I know we are all sick of talking or even thinking about covid, but I would rather know what’s out there rather than be blindsided by catching covid from ignorance of the facts. The new variant is more dangerous in many ways than the original Omicron and Delta variants because of its increased transmissibility.

People happily threw away their masks and moved about with a new sense of freedom and relief when the original covid cases dropped markedly, deaths went down, and mask restrictions were lifted in almost every state.

They were congratulating each other on having gotten through 2 years of rising cases and felt safe because they were mostly all fully vaxed up and thought the worst was over.

The symptoms of the new variant, which lasts roughly 10 days are similar to regular covid symptoms and include fever, coughing, headaches, and fatigue.

One neighbor caught it on a plane returning from a vacation. Another married couple thought that they may have got it shopping at Costco, another at his job at the post office.

The only good news is that the new variant does not seem as deadly. But it is still a risk that most people are unaware of. According to the CDC, the BA5 variant is currently the most dominant strain of covid in the country.

The latest estimates are that the covid will not be reduced to endemic status until 2024. Endemic means it is still out there, like the flu or the common cold but not at such a life-altering level as today.

Being fully vaccinated is still better than not being vaxed at all. Also, hold off tossing your masks and avoid contact with people that you know have the new variant. If you have it, be prepared to self-isolate for at least 10 days.

The rollercoaster ride with covid is not quite over. Don’t step off until it is.
