Summary

The provided content discusses the international response, primarily through economic sanctions, to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, which began with the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and escalated with the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Abstract

The article outlines the sequence of events following Russia's military buildup and subsequent invasion of Ukraine. It highlights the international community's response, led by the EU and the US, which has predominantly consisted of imposing a series of economic sanctions on Russia. Despite these measures, Russia has continued its aggressive actions, leading to widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis, with millions of Ukrainian refugees. The text questions the effectiveness of sanctions, drawing a parallel with the lack of action against Hitler's Germany, and critically examines the role of the United Nations in preventing such conflicts.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that the repeated use of sanctions has been ineffective in deterring Russia's aggression, as evidenced by the ongoing conflict and the escalation of violence.
  • There is a critical view of the international community's reliance on sanctions as the primary tool for responding to military aggression, with the implication that they are an insufficient measure to stop a determined aggressor like Putin.
  • The text implies that the world's inaction, apart from sending money and weapons, is akin to watching a reality TV show, emphasizing a sense of detachment and passivity in the face of human suffering.
  • The author compares the current situation in Ukraine with the actions of Hitler and the Nazi movement, suggesting that sanctions alone were not enough to stop the atrocities of that era either.
  • The effectiveness of the United Nations is brought into question, as the organization has not managed to prevent the conflict or protect the sovereignty of Ukraine, despite its mandate to maintain international peace and security.

War In Ukraine

“I Dare You To Cross This Line”

Russia massed its military on and around Ukraine’s border. The world waited on the edge of their seats as President Biden provided daily briefings as to when he guessed Russia might attack. For several weeks Biden’s refrain “Russia’s attacking by…” (Wednesday or Saturday or possibly the middle of next week?) was a daily constant.

Prior to the attack on February 23th, Russia began to move troops into neighboring Donetsk and Luhansk regions declaring them independent sovereign entities. Then, Russia attacked. Russia and Putin had no idea this would go badly for them. Very badly I am pleased to say.

EU adopts package of sanctions in response to Russian recognition of the non-government controlled areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine and sending of troops into the region (press release, 23 February 2022) The United States, following the EU’s lead initially, hit Russia with sanctions and told Putin and Russia to stop. The attack on Ukraine is underway.

Putin smiled for the media. His mouth moving, the lies tumble through his stained yellow teeth. Weasel-like eyes become slits as he smiles. Line in the sand #1 — breached. Here come the sanctions.

Someone from his inner circle suggests Putin use breath mints. His daughter.

The EU on Feb. 24th held a “special meeting” to determine further sanctions against Russia for their “special operation” against Ukraine.

The US Government and most of the media surmised that Russia’s plan was to take the capital of Ukraine. They were probably correct. Russia was not doing very well at this, though Putin said everything was going as planned.

Line in the sand #2 — breached. Putin smiled… and ate a breath mint. Former President Trump declares “Putin is a genius”. Trump has never been more envious of Putin than now. And here come more sanctions.

Come Feb. 28th, the onslaught continues and Russia refuses to respond to world appeals to halt the war. The results are (what else?) more sanctions!

Line in the sand #3 — breached. Russia continues a war the world calls unjustified and unprovoked. More sanctions coming now. The world is getting serious.

Putin was seen peeking out a 2nd-floor window from his winter chateau, grinning. He awaits America’s MAGA cult members who all profess to hate Communists. They’re a no-show of course. Attacking communists on their computers, in their parents’ basement, is much safer (and warmer) than actually fighting real Communists.

As the war continues into March 2nd, the US and EU promise more sanctions.

Line in the sand #4 — breached.

Putin is heard all the way in Moscow screaming “I don’t care about your stinking sanctions!” He then orders the bombing of residential areas. Because he really doesn’t care about sanctions after nine years.

March 9th, Russia becomes more aggressive in its attacks on citizens and non-military targets, bombing hospitals, childrens’ daycare centers. And of course, the EU and the US agree on even further sanctions.

The United States and NATO agree to sanction Russia’s wealthy elite.

Sanctions targeting those responsible for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine are now extended six months until 15 September 2022.

Line in the sand #5 — breached.

Putin, reportedly wandering the grounds of his chateau muttering something about breath mints and the pandemic as he orders the bombing of all hospitals, and citizens to be shot on sight.

March 15th, Russia is again threatened with more sanctions as they continue to murder women and children, and old folks fleeing the war. Biden now declares more US sanctions and dares Putin to cross this line. He does.

Ukraine is now a pile of rubble. “More sanctions” is the war cry from President Biden and the United States, the EU, NATO, and the United Nations.

An Interesting Note and a Question:

As we watch the modern-day incarnation of Hitler and the Nazi movement attack a smaller neighboring country, displacing 2.5 million people, murdering thousands of innocents while bombing hospitals, schools, and historic infrastructure, sanctions are continually applied. They have stopped nothing.

We have sanctioned Russia for 9 straight years. If anyone believes this works and will work, must assuredly believe in fairytales.

Following is the complete timeline of sanctions taken by the European Council dating from Match 3, 2014, beginning with Russia's attack against Ukraine and their claim to Crimea, to the present. Literally hundreds of sanctions.

Otherwise, nothing has been done to stop Putin and Russia. Putin has attacked and claimed territory in 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, and 2022. What is the common theme to be found in all this? Economic sanctions. Nine consecutive years of economic sanctions, each on top of another. The results? War and now over 3 million refugees (the most in history) seeking help.

Nine years of economic sanctions that have worked so well that Putin decided to simply declare an all-out war against Ukraine. And the world sits by and watches on TV the most popular ‘reality tv’ ever… the mass murder of Ukrainian civilians.

This inaction on the part of the free world, sending Ukraine money and weapons but abstaining from any involvement out of fear of Russia raises an interesting question or two.

Q. What would the world look like today had the entire world simply sanctioned Germany and Hitler back in 1939 or earlier and never attacked?

Q. And… what exactly is the purpose of The United Nations? Anyone?
