Wanted: An Undivided Heart

Steps for seeking a clean, pure heart for God

You know what I’d like to do one morning? Wake up with my focus immediately and entirely on God. This issue has been weighing on me for quite a while. The other morning, I woke early and had some time to be still and prevent my mind from going into the 100-mph mode it’s accustomed to. It worked for about five minutes.

In that short time, I prayed and asked God for this very blessing, an undivided heart, a heart that sought only Him. Praying scripture to God is good for us, so this was my prayer:

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51: 10, NIV)

David was an amazing monitor of his heart, wasn’t he? I try to be like David, but I have a busy life, you know?

We were designed with a pure heart, but sin entered the Garden of Eden and now humans have two natures: the God-seeking and the sinful. Ezekiel called the sinful one a heart of stone.

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. (Psalms 86:11, NIV)

So how do we get an undivided heart? The verse above gives an answer in “rely on His faithfulness.” How do we even get to that point?

Be still

· Study His word

· Talk to Him

· Inspire others with His stories

· Learn your weaknesses so you can address them

· Listen to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit

No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead (Philippians 3:13, NLT)

This scripture gives me hope. If even Paul was still seeking God’s transforming work in his life, there’s hope for me!

As I have written before, music stirs me more than most anything else. I invite you to listen to Rich Mullins’ “My One Thing” inspired by Philippians 3:13.

I hope it helps you “be still” in the moment and move closer to a heart for God.
