Summary

Writers Review Writers is a new publication that invites writers to share positive recommendations of other writers' work, fostering a community of mutual support and discovery on the platform.

Abstract

The "Writers Review Writers" publication, inspired by Jennifer Rudarbith, is designed to be a hub where writers can promote each other's work. It encourages the sharing of positive reviews and recommendations, aiming to expand the audience for writers and provide readers with a curated source of quality content. The initiative operates under the principle of "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all," and it prohibits self-promotion, ensuring the focus remains on showcasing the work of others. Writers interested in contributing can join by commenting on the story, and they are encouraged to tag the writers they are praising, provide links to recommended stories, and even share lists of favorite stories or writers.

When you run across a great writer you want to share your good news with the world right?

“Hey, I read this awesome thing. You should check it out!” you shout into the abyss. “Hello,” you tap the mic, “Is this thing on?”

Maybe you even read something by another writer, like me for example, encouraging you to read AND promote other writers. “Sure,” you say to yourself, “But will anyone notice if I do?”

Enter Writers Review Writers a new publication inspired by Jennifer Rudarbith. Jennifer commented on my story What I Learned Profiling 30 Different Writers in 30 Days suggesting I start a publication where others could join me in profiling awesome writers.

The more I thought about it, the more it felt like a win-win for readers and writers. Writers can gain a greater audience and readers will have a location to go to when they are looking for recommendations. Anything that helps connect readers with writing they are happy to read improves the platform for all of us.

Consider this your open invitation to join Writers Review Writers. Simply comment on this story asking to be added as a writer. Here are the guidelines:

  • Only positive recommendations are allowed. We are going with the classic “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
  • Feel free to highlight a single-story, writer, a group of writers, or a publication.
  • Tag the writer you are praising and provide links to any stories you want to recommend. To tag a writer, type @ followed by their medium user name. Note that not everyone has a user name that matches their profile name. You can always find the right one by clicking on someone’s profile and looking at the url.
  • No self-promotion. This is not a place to share your own stories. Links to your subscription page or membership page are fine. You can even refer to a story of your own if it fits into the review, but the focus needs to be firmly on another writer. For example, “When I was writing my story about cast iron pans, I ran across this excellent writer who takes it to a whole other level” with the rest of the story being about that writer.
  • Lists are very welcome! Maybe you have already started a list of your favorite stories. Lists are great because they are so easy to keep updated. To share a list write a story about your list and what criteria you use to decide which stories get added. Then link to the list within your story.
  • Already published stories are fine. Stores will show on the home page in reverse order of date published not date added to the pub so an old story might be buried a bit but should still be findable.

That’s about it. If you would like to write anything specifically praising another story, writer, or publication please consider posting it here.
