Want a Successful Startup? Stop Building Alone

How collaborations will boost your business

When I started my business last year, I was prepared for the loneliness of entrepreneurship. However, I thought that if I just worked hard enough then my business would take off and I would be successful. Now, that I am approaching one year in my business, I realize that I made a detrimental mistake.

I attempted to build my business alone.

When I started out, I would post a piece of content and receive no views. I became frustrated that no one was willing to view my content that I had put hard work into; then, I realized it wasn’t their fault as no one knew about my work. Then, I started promoting myself through social media and I started getting some views as more people started finding my content.

In October, I joined Twitter and found multiple people in the same space as me. In December, I started working together with them to produce content that was shared with their audiences. Furthermore, since these other content creators knew about me, they will regularly retweet my tweets and shout me out to their audience. As a result, I have seen an explosion in my email opt-ins, which is shown in the graph below. Now, I know that the fastest way to build your business is to collaborate with others that are in the same space as you.

What Are Collaborations?

Collaborations are opportunities where you create content with someone else in the same niche as you. Since they have an audience, creating content with them will allow you to be introduced to their audience, which will help to grow your audience. An audience is essential to the success of your startup because you need someone to sell your product or service to.

These collaborations can take different forms, from writing a guest blog post to making an appearance on a podcast. The goal of the collaboration is to bring two or more people’s audience into the same space, where they can learn about other people in the space. While your own content may attract a few new email subscribers, a collaboration with a well-established creator could attract hundreds to thousands.

Types of Collaborations

There are many different ways to collaborate with others. I want to cover a few of the different ways, how they work, and which may be best for you.

Guest blog posts

Guest blog posts are where you can write a blog post that will be posted on a different creator's blog. This benefits the other creator because they do not need to have to create new content for that week. It will benefit your company because the creator’s audience will be able to read your blog post and become exposed to you. Guest blog posts are great if you already have a blog or enjoy creating written content.

My experience

I have published one guest blog post in a collaborative blog, Bolded Science, which is a collaborative blog aimed at scientists. Scientists and science graduate students are my ideal market, which allowed me to gain additional audience members who follow the Bolded Science blog.

Tips for guest blog posts:

  • Include a bio section at the end of your blog post that leads the reader to your lead magnet.
  • Choose blogs that attract your ideal audience.
  • Submit a well-written informative blog post. This may be your only exposure for some people and you want to leave a great impression.

Podcast appearances

Podcasts are an inherently collaborative platform. The majority of podcasts are in interview form with new guests every show. Therefore, the podcast creator needs to keep having new guests every week. Appearing on podcasts can give the podcast’s audience a chance to get to know for around an hour. A podcast interview can be a bit more intimate than a blog post because they can hear — and sometimes see you — interact with the host. Another benefit of podcasts is that you will be asked questions, which makes it a little easier than coming up with your own content. Podcast appearances are great if you are conversational and comfortable being recorded.

My experience

While I have not currently completed a podcast appearance, I have multiple scheduled for the next couple of months. In the meantime, I have created my own podcast that allows me to offer other creators the ability to expand their own reach.

Tips for podcast appearances:

  • At the end of the episode, when the interviewer asks where people can find you, mention a lead magnet instead of your social media.
  • Ask for the planned questions prior to the interview to give you a chance to prepare.
  • Ensure that the podcast would attract your ideal audience.

Youtube/social media collaborations

YouTube and different social media platforms allow you to create collaborations either live or prerecorded. Other social media platforms can include Facebook and Instagram. The majority of these collaborations are done through video; therefore, you should be able to be comfortable on video if you want to do these collaborations. For the other content creator, these provide content on their platform and for you, it gets you directly in front of their subscribers or followers.

My experience

I have completed two YouTube collaborations. One was on a channel aimed towards Ph.D. students and another was on a channel aimed towards scientists. I have become friends with both of the hosts, and regularly receive retweets and shout-outs from them, which continually helps to grow my audience.

Tips for Video Collaborations:

  • Make sure your background is clean prior to the collaboration.
  • Make sure that the creator’s audience mimics your ideal audience.
  • If possible, at the end of the collaboration suggest both your lead magnet and your handle for the same social media site.

How to Land a Collaborative Opportunity?

When I started my business, I knew about these opportunities but felt like I was too small and unimportant to be given the time of day. I also was very unsure of how you get these opportunities. I wrongly thought that you needed to wait until the other creators reached out to you before getting these opportunities. So for anyone else on the fence, I want to share some easy tips to help you land some of these collaborative opportunities.

Build Your Startup With Others

No matter the product you are building, the most important factor of the success of your startup is the number of people who know about your product and would be willing to buy it. Therefore, creating and building your audience is essential to building a successful business. The easiest and quickest way to build your audience is through collaborating with others.
