Wandering Through Walktober: A Love Letter to Auckland’s Streets

Journey with me down Queen Street and beyond; let’s embrace the magic and nostalgia.

An evening at the corner of Queen Street and Custom Street. Photo by Author

This story is in response to a prompt suggested by HAPPINESS + WEALTH ⭐: Prompt #10 — It’s Walktober! Take us for a walk in your favorite real-life or imaginary place.

You know, there’s something inexplicably poetic about the footfalls on a familiar pavement. If streets could talk, Queen Street in Auckland would be my most cherished confidant. It’s seen me on my best days, my “I need a large coffee” mornings, and those serene evenings where the world just feels right.

Every day, as I lace up my worn-out sneakers (don’t judge; they’ve seen better days!), I look forward to that daily pilgrimage. A journey not to a far-off destination, but through a medley of memories, emotions, and those tiny mundane moments that, for some reason, stick with you.

Remember how people in the early 2000s were obsessed with collecting CDs? My walks down Queen Street feel like I’m shuffling through my favorite playlist. Every step, a new track. Every corner, a familiar tune.

First stop: The fragrance of freshly brewed coffee mixed with a hint of spring in the air. Yeah, it’s that little café on the corner, with the quirky barista who’s probably seen one too many indie movies.

Ah, then comes the stretch that’s an unabashed tribute to my retail therapy days (okay, it’s a still ongoing phase). Shops with window displays ranging from the classic to the eccentric. From haute couture that makes me think, “Who actually wears that?” to some vintage gems that make me go, “Oh, that would’ve rocked in ‘05!”

Passing by the buskers, I give them a nod. Some days it’s a soft ballad that tugs at the heartstrings, other days it’s a jazzy number that makes me want to dance like no one’s watching (or like everyone is watching, but I’m nailing it).

Queen Street isn’t just a street. It’s a mosaic of cultures, emotions, and moments. And like every great song from the ’90s, it has its high notes, its melancholic tones, and its downright goofy beats. You remember that trend when everyone wore those ultra-baggy jeans and oversized flannels, thinking we looked so cool? Yeah, Queen Street has its own versions of that — places and moments that seem out of place, but somehow just fit right in.

Continuing the journey, the looming Auckland Sky Tower acts like that bookmark reminding me where I am in the story. It’s as if it whispers, “Hey, I’ve seen you grow and change, just like this city. But some things, like this walk, remain timeless.” I’ve often stopped mid-way, gazing at its magnificence, losing myself in a reverie of all the walks I’ve taken and all the stories the streets could tell.

Heading towards Britomart, the atmosphere subtly shifts. The urban vibe gives way to a more laid-back aura.

It’s like transitioning from an upbeat pop track to a soulful ballad. Suddenly, you feel the sea’s proximity. The air tastes saltier, and that unmistakable maritime vibe tinges the atmosphere.

Oh, and let’s not even talk about the seagulls! Those winged rascals have photobombed countless of my selfies. Once, a particularly audacious one even tried to nab a chip right out of my hand. Talk about audacity!

But here’s the magic of Britomart: The old blends seamlessly with the new. Those vintage heritage buildings stand proud, telling tales of yesteryears, while the swanky new-age establishments buzz with the promise of tomorrow. And amidst all this, I find myself, swaying between nostalgia and the thrill of the now.

As we stroll further, the Viaduct Harbour comes into view. Ah, the Viaduct! A place of countless memories. It’s where friendships have been solidified over shared meals, where first dates turned into second dates (or didn’t — but hey, at least the food was good!), and where I’ve sat many times, reflecting on life’s quirks, as the boats bob gently in the water.

There’s something indescribably serene about watching the sunset over the harbor. The golden hues of the dying sun reflect off the water, painting the world in shades of amber and rose. And in that moment, all seems right. The worries of yesterday seem distant, and the uncertainties of tomorrow, manageable.

By the time we finish our walk, night has begun to drape the city. The twinkling lights from the buildings, the boats, and the streets merge with the stars above, creating a celestial dance of luminosity. And as I soak it all in, I am reminded of the beauty in everyday moments, the magic in the mundane, and the stories that are written with every step we take.

It’s also spring in Auckland as we step into October and this can be witnessed by the beautiful blossoming of cherry blossom trees. Picture taken at the Auckland domain. Photo by the author.

The Journey’s End, but the Stories Continue

It’s proof that sometimes, you don’t need an epic adventure to find meaning and magic. It’s all around us, waiting to be discovered, cherished, and shared.

If this little jaunt sparked a memory, made you smile, or simply tickled your wanderlust, why not share it? After all, every street, lane, and alley has a tale to tell. And who knows, your story might just be the inspiration for someone else’s next adventure.
