WandaVision Was Hauntingly Beautiful

And absolutely heartbreaking

WandaVision (2021) Disney, Marvel

I finally finished WandaVision a few minutes ago. I wanted to write this down before I forgot how I felt.

I didn’t watch the show when it first came out. I didn’t have Disney+ and I’m not a die-hard Marvel fan — almost the contrary. I’ve watched all the movies linked to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), and I’m often very critical of the heroes (my unpopular opinion is that Iron Man is not a hero).

I’ve never really connected with Wanda before the show. She was there, she was bad, then she was offered a chance to do better. Sure, she took it, but it always felt too easy, too straightforward. I never felt that she develops any connections with the Avengers, besides Vision.

Still, at the end of Endgame, I felt for her. I felt her pain, and I felt anger for how Tony Stark was celebrated, even though he wasn’t the only one to have sacrificed everything. It felt unfair. She, and Vision, deserved more.

[Spoilers from now on]

When I first started watching the show, I truly wondered what the hell was going on. I had been spoiled, so I knew it was sitcom parodies, but I didn’t understand the goal. Surely, Disney wouldn’t have developed an entire series just for us to watch happy Wanda and Vision through the ages — not that I wouldn’t have watched it.

Then, we started to be offered hindsight. It’s all a show, literally. They’re actors, and victims, and Wanda must not know she is trapped there. I sincerely thought someone was after her, and I wasn’t so far off.

The sitcom parodies are fun, and it’s indeed nice to witness them happy and founding a family, but the power of the show is much deeper, and more dual.

Wanda is as much the villain as she is a victim. She didn’t mean for everything to happen. She was working on her grief, until she realized that her loved one was being used. For them, Vision was materials. For her, he was everything she had lost.

I get the going crazy, taking him back, and trying to create something she almost had. This all life, it was at her fingertips. I suppose there’s some Gatsby in her.

If you haven’t experienced it, you can’t imagine what it feels like to know you won’t ever again see that person, feel them, smell them, hear them, talk to them, touch them, observe them.

There isn’t a single word to describe that feeling of utter grief, pain, anger, desperation, and perdition. Loss just doesn’t come close enough.

WandaVision does a great job at showing it. The entire show is an act of despair, and there’s no happy ending. She stands alone, again, at the end. She sacrifices, again, while remaining guilty. She just keeps on losing, no matter what she does.

To be able to create such an ambiguous character, with good morals, a good heart, but still so human that her emotions get the best of her … To show that having power is not all that matters, and actually means more responsibility than power … I think it’s powerful.

Just like Monica, given the chance, I probably would have done the same.

In the end, I think she is lucky. She had 3 more weeks. She loved again and even had a taste of a family. It’s more than what most people get. Losing the kids was heartbreaking, but at least, for a few days, she had it. She had her dream.

And she had the chance to say goodbye.

What Marvel did right

Many people loved the movie Civil War because we see all the Avengers (even the ones that aren’t official members) fight against each other. It’s entertaining, yet upsetting.

I enjoyed did, because I enjoyed the politics of it. Yes, I’m one of those people that believe the Sokovia accords, with just a few tweaks, would be good. They might try to do good, but Tony Stark, Ultron, and Vision are the proof that the Avengers shouldn’t be above the law.

Also, yes, that’s the French in me hating that it’s all about America. Americans saving the world, and they get to crap on other countries. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, or even Captain America would tell me that I would speak alien without them … I’ve heard it before from people that weren’t even veterans …

You’re all going to scream at me in the comments, aren’t you?

What now?

Well, now that my mini-rant against Marvel is over, we can go back to WandaVision. I wasn’t disappointed I took the time to watch it until the end.

I know Wanda will be part of the next Marvel movie about Doctor Strange. I also know the twins seem to still be alive. There’s also the white Vision that disappeared and could come back. She said to Agnes she would see her... There are possibilities!

The one thing that bothered me was that no Avengers came to help her, or even check on her. They fought together, they know she lost Vision, but they didn’t care enough to keep in touch? It frustrates me that after everything she sacrificed by their sides, they couldn’t show up. Yes, I know, it’s more complicated than that, but it left a bitter-sweet taste in my mouth.

It just proves that Thor was right: they are work colleagues, not friends, even less family.

What did you think of WandaVision?

I also watched Loki and thought it was interesting. I’m curious to see if they’ll prolong it. However, I didn’t feel strongly enough about it to write an article. I just want to say that the love story came out of nowhere and didn’t feel real to me. That’s all. The rest, I liked.

You can receive my articles directly in your emails (I promise it’s not a trap). I write reviews but also more personal stories. I like to keep it mysterious.
