Walking Through Boston With My Brother Was a Great Time
February Six Word Photo Story Challenge “Statues”
Is it 3rd Rock’s giant head?
A couple of years ago, my brother visited from Texas. We’re both shutterbugs, so we planned a day in Boston to photograph anything that might interest us.
We probably put a good eight or nine miles on our feet that day. We walked from TD Garden to the North End, Beacon Hill, Boston Common, and the Public Gardens.
At one point, we ended up along the Charles River and the Esplanade. It was there we found Arthur Fiedler’s head. Well, a statue, at least. The Esplanade is famous for its summer concerts and annual Boston Pops concert on the Fourth of July.
The Esplanade might have easily been Fiedler’s home away from home. He began holding the annual holiday concert in 1929 and did so for another 50 years before he died in 1979.
I’d never been to the Esplanade. I’ve seen it many times on television on July 4, but until that day, I’d never been there.
After he passed away, the statue of Fiedler’s head was dedicated on June 30, 1984. The sculpture has 83 aluminium plates and sits on a granite base.
The Fiedler Memorial was one of many we saw walking through the streets of Boston, and it’s not a day I’ll forget. I hope it won’t be too long before I see my brother again. Spending time with him was worth every step.
