Short Story
Walking the Dog At Night
Based on a true story
It was darker than I thought it would be when we left.
The air was cold, filled with that late autumn chill.
I harnessed the gentle beast that I’ve been my walking companion for the last couple years. She yipped in hollered with excitement
I should’ve known something was up when she growled just as we walked out the door.
The last couple of nights a raccoon was hanging out as we left, so I chalked it up to that.
A few moments later, we left the amber glow of the porch light, and set off on our adventure.
Our streets are dark.
Even though it’s nestled firmly in suburbia, my neighborhood has a quarter of the street lights the others around us have.
Usually, I love this aspect.
Firstly, I kept the pup calmer when we first started walking. There were far fewer distractions.
Secondly, it was a nice change of pace. There are not many better ways to spend an evening than a stroll under the stars.
The walk started the same as always. She padded along while I thought about nothing at all.
Then things changed.
My dog’s ears perked up. I could tell something was bothering her.
My first thought was cat. I don’t know what ancient feline wronged my dog in a past life, but she had a blood feud with them.
But it wasn’t that she was just alert, not growling or foaming at the mouth.
I also thought it could be a deer. She’d seen her first one that long ago and it was a similar reaction.
But this was less curious and more uncomfortable.
It worried me.
The dog was 150 pounds of solid muscle and feared nothing. To add to the eerie ambience, the fog rolled in.
We walked a little further. I couldn’t help feeling something was watching me.
Several times I turned around, expecting to see someone behind me. It was after midnight, so there were no people in their yards, and nearly every house was dark.
The feeling grew and grew. I could tell she was getting more and more uncomfortable. I felt a shiver down my spine. I swore I could feel someone’s eyes on me. I couldn’t take it anymore.
Finally I returned home.
I never figured out what may have been out there with me, but it was a few days before we went on another walk.
