Walking Everywhere in Minneapolis

The Skyway is neat

I walked from the shelter to the library, a twenty to thirty-minute walk. I’m freezing because it’s winter. The wind is blowing and it’s snowing.

At first, I only had a fur-lined Denim jacket. Around Thanksgiving, there was a clothing give-away. I snagged an old, worn-out winter coat.

I had asked another homeless man where everyone went. He mentioned the Skyway, but it blew over my head when he said “a lot of people go to the library.”

I should have Inquired further

I should have asked him about the skyways. It would have saved me trips to the hospital, and I would have been a lot warmer. I didn’t learn what the skyway was until two months later. When I got a bed upstairs and didn’t have to be on the streets all day.

The Skyway is a system of overhead-covered walkways. That connects most of the buildings in downtown Minneapolis. It’s a neat system.

A guy showed me around, I was fascinated

I was lying on my bed upstairs. Olivia had sent money so I could get a haircut. The guy in the bed across from me offered to show me around the skyway.

The Skyway fascinated me. It was full of office workers going about their business. There was no need for coats because the skyway was climate controlled.

It gave me something to do

There were restaurants and other businesses along the way. A person could spend the whole day in the skyway, without being in the cold.

I spent a lot of time wandering the skyway after that. I enjoyed watching the attractive female office workers. When I had money, I enjoyed the coffee shops and fast-food places as well.

Walk the skyway, it’s warmer that way

If you visit Minneapolis, I encourage you to explore the skyway. It’s safer than walking across the busy city streets, and it’s a good place to people-watch.

I wish the circumstances could have been different. There’s a lot to like about Minneapolis. I would like to go back someday. It would be fun to show Olivia around.

Final thought:

Don’t be afraid to ask, if you don’t know something, or need help. I could have stayed warm, and not been sick all the time if I had asked about the skyway sooner.

It doesn’t hurt to ask and seek help.
