POETRY

Walking by Lilies

a free verse poem, #flowerweek

Image by S. Hermann & F. Richter from Pixabay

My ankles turn with the uneven ground, sweat crawling down my spine, I walk toward the sun.

Cars barrel by me and I wonder if they wonder who is that woman out walking alone. I wonder if they wonder if I need any help.

One foot in front of the other, slow and steady, I walk by the lilies. They are in a curving row and sorted by color, proud gaping mouths and tongues in a collective laugh I cannot hear.

Holding my breath against their perfume, walking by lilies, I am desperate to not think of you.
