Wait: Something Better Will Follow

This story is inspired by Geetika Sethi’s story ‘wait’. I loved the caption and was reminded of an incident that happened and I am really proud of the clear message of trust and hope and faith for everyone. It is important to remember people in your life who helped you to think and gave you hope that something better would follow, so open your mind to other possibilities. When one door closes many others open up if you wait and also take up the opportunity.
Urvashi was a brilliant student and in her final year of her Bachelors Hons. in Business Studies, she applied for admission for her Masters in Business Management at the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad in India. She sailed through the written exam but somehow she was not selected for the programme.
This young lady was upset and cried her heart out. I remember that her parents and friends consoled her but she was not happy at all. As her professor, I reasoned with her that she would be a very good Chartered Accountant( CA). As luck would have it, she took the course up with a new zest completed her degree with flying colours. She never forgot this advice and also did not forget me.
Many years later I met her and she hugged me and excitedly she said that she was working with a well-known company KPMG, in a very senior position. I took her number and she promised to get her kids to meet me.
I was organizing a national level quiz programme and I invited her as a Guest of Honour. She was by then elevated to the position of Executive Director and Partner of the company.
I will never forget what she said on the stage. It was a clear message for more than 1000 people seated in the auditorium.
I am here in front of you because when I was at a low ebb and did not want to study any further because I did not get into masters in management:
“ It was my teacher, mentor, and friend who told me to wait, as something better was in store for me. When I got my admission in Chartered Accountancy, it was new hope and a new direction for me in the subject that I excelled in. I took the opportunity and here I am a very successful executive. Further, she articulated, never forget someone who inspired, mentored and nurtured you to find a direction in your life”
This morning when I took permission to write about the incident, immediately she sent me a picture. More than 30 years have passed and we still share a bond of love and affection.
