TRIM TRIM TRIM ━>

When writing it is CRUCIAL! To make your point simple and straightforward, few readers are going to read a long sentence to only be getting value after reading it, it’s your job to grab the readers attention in the first 5 seconds.

PICTURES ARE WORTH ¹⁰⁰⁰ WORDS ━>

Humans pay more attention to pictures (including gifs) then a paragraph of text, to prove this what’s the first thing that got your attention, I bet you are going to say the GIF right?

That’s why I included it, it makes you more engaged and more likely to read what I am going to say next.

SUBHEADS ARE IMPORTANT ━>

Subheads (subheadings) makes it easier for the user to know which section tells them what, imagine subheading as the tour guide map, it tells the user what points might be of interest to them.

My advice to you? BE the tour guide, show the user what parts might be of interest.

Use Emotive Language ━>

Ahh my favourite, emotive language is powerful! All you do is you write in a way that makes a person emotional.

For example, if I say…

She meant the world to me, but alas she has now drifted away from my embrace.

What emotion have you experienced from reading that? That’s right! Sadness. Emotive language engages users, we are emotional creatures and feel the need to resonate with someone’s pain.

Expect the Unexpected ━>

When you twist users expectations you drastically increase their interest level, for example:

Last week, Websnorp destroyed Megacorp medical’s website in order to save it.

When you read this you will think, “What!? that doesn’t make any sense!” What will you do next? Stop reading? OF COURSE NOT! since you want to know how is this possible.

Be unpredictable yet truthful whenever possible, this creates intrigue.

Let’s make it personal ━>

In writing it’s important to make your words personal, this builds a connection with your reader. As a writer, it is your job to add that unique touch to your work or your canvas.

Imagine it like this, as a writer you are the painter and your articles/books is your canvas, But what makes you different from other writers? That’s your personality, your voice which is unique to YOU and no one else.

Design & Formatting ━>

In this article, I hope you have noticed a few things I did to grab your attention. What are those things?

Text font

Bold letters

Lines with arrows

Colours

Text Style — Why did I change the text font in a few images? Because I wanted your eyes to gravitate towards that area and read the caption. I believe as a writer (painter) it’s my job for me to persuade your eyes, why? because it can be used for greater storytelling.

This can be done negatively, yes, but why would you want to do that? Your readers are trusting you to give good valuable information.

Bold letters — This just as the first point guides your eyes to certain areas. However, the second use of this is to emphasise on certain points and make the reader remember them.

Lines with arrows — I did this to break up the article into certain sections to be aesthetically pleasing and to also allow the reader to find points of interest easier in this article.

Colours — The colours that I have used (Yellow & Orange) makes your eyes look at that graphic, these colours have been scientifically proven to cultivate attention. If you want more information about this click here.
