In his classic political satire Animal Farm¹, author George Orwell used the pigs to describe people who betray everyone’s trust for the pigs’ powerful and selfish needs.
Well, the pigs are back.
In far too many states in the US and in far too many countries around the world, the LGBTQ community has become the front line of the war against human rights. Political and religious organizations are using hate and ignorance to rally support for their repressive agenda against our basic human rights.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed bills that ban gender-affirming care for minors, restrict chosen pronoun use in schools and force people to use the bathroom corresponding with their sex assigned at birth. His “Don’t Say Gay” laws prohibiting the teaching of gender and LGBTQ+ issues were expanded from public elementary schools to the whole state system.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill that made it a felony to provide gender-affirming medical care to minors.

Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, South Dakota and West Virginia recently passed restrictions on puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender youths.

PEN America, the nonprofit free speech organization cited 1,477 instances of books being prohibited during the first half of the 2022–23 academic year, up 28.5% from 1,149 cases in the previous semester. Overall, the organization has recorded more than 4,000 instances of banned books since it started tracking cases in July 2021. ²
