Vocal Vs Medium-What I Like About Vocal Media
I found out about Vocal Media, thanks to a Facebook ad. Where I live, it’s hard to find an outlet for writers who want to join a community of other writers. It seemed like a godsend. I joined as a paying member to get more money and access to writing challenges.
If you ever tried to write a short story before, you know how difficult it can be. Sometimes, you don’t know where to begin. I found out that with Vocal challenges, you will be given a topic or subject matter. The rest is up to you.
These writing challenges are often a great incentive because the prize money is large. I haven’t won anything yet, but if I do win, I have bragging rights. If you win, you will feel good.
Even if you don’t win, you can reuse the story and publish your story in other websites like Medium and make money.
The Waiting Game
I am an impatient person. Before you can see your article, it will need to be approved by a moderator. This can take up to 24 hours on weekdays but it will take longer on weekends.
With Medium, there are no waits if you choose to self-publish. I have done that a lot since I now have opened a new publication, The Happy Blogger.
It’s great that articles have to be approved because I am peeved at seeing some articles filled with obscenities and very little content. I have often seen a lot of ‘bait’ articles where the title doesn’t match the article on Medium. These types of nonsense articles will eventually be flagged on Medium but it takes time.
Moderators on Vocal Media will have flagged a lot of articles that are filled with an outrageously long title and other things designed to entice readers for the purpose of monetizing income.
I like the grammar and spell check better on Medium than Vocal. It is automatic on Medium but on Vocal, I noticed that a few spelling errors went unchallenged.
It’s harder to get more followers on Vocal. I have tried but still don’t know the best ways to get followers. I have tried using Facebook Vocal groups to get followers but it has been without much success. Fortunately, you don’t need to get lots of followers to cash out, but you have to meet the minimum threshold.
In summary, the best part of Vocal Media is the challenges. I like some of the topics which helped me to complete some interesting short stories. I have written a story about the Scarlet Macaw which you can read here. Vocal also publishes the winning short stories which will undoubtedly help aspiring short story writers. If you want to perfect your writing, I would encourage you to read all the winning stories from various challenges.
Here is my short story which I published on Vocal.

If you would like to join Vocal, I have a link for you to join here. Some benefits of being a paying member are that you can edit your published work, you can withdraw your money when you get $20, and you have access to all the great writing challenges. One of the challenges this month is to write about your choice for a hometown hero. You also get regular incentives for publishing more pieces.
As a writer, I think it is good to try other sites in order to learn and grow. I am going to try Vocal for a few more months to see if it is a great way to earn income. So far, I like the challenges.
I have a new publication, and please follow the Happy Blogger to get more stories like this at: https://medium.com/the-happy-blogger
Thanks for the read. Til next time:)
