Vocal Media Revised Their Platform So I Revised My Critique
The changes are better but . . . naw, you’ll have to read to be informed
Both offer similar features but they are different
After publishing on Medium and Vocal Media, I found the first to be more rewarding both financially and emotionally based on reader engagement.
After a detailed comparison between the two, I chose to discontinue my Vocal Media Membership and wrote exclusively on Medium. However, as any good marketing company should do, Vocal reached out to me with a new plan and reduced membership rates to win me back.
Hey there,
We haven’t seen you in a while but reaching out to share some updates on Vocal+ Subscription. We recently released Vocal Bonuses, a more direct way for the Vocal team to reward you directly in your Wallet! You can get a 50% discount on your subscription for 3 months if you reactivate your subscription today.
I can never pass up a good deal so I signed up for a three month trial
Since I have begun writing on Vocal again, I have submitted the same stories to both publications.
Medium
Everything published on Medium, I also share on ManyStories which is a platform that boosts reads for Medium writers. I then created collections of my articles by theme to see if that would be valuable. Two of the collections, Dog Stories and Travel Tips and Stories, I replicated on Facebook but I will explain that in a moment.
Money is earned when a member reads the story and then their membership dues are divided depending upon how many posts are read and time spent on each post. Readers who are not members do not boost earnings unless they decide to join Medium within 30 days of reading an article. This is why I share article from Medium on ManyStories and not Facebook. ManyStories readers are mostly Medium members.
Vocal Media
Articles that were published on Vocal Media linked to two Facebook pages I created Dagney’s Stories: A Dog Who Thinks She’s Human and RVing in Retirement. The purpose of the collections and Facebook pages was to target readers’ special interest. Since the goal was to determine if both platforms offered equal opportunities to earn money, I wanted to keep them as parallel as possible.
Writers who are part of the Vocal free program earn $3.80 per thousand reads. Vocal members earn $6.00 per thousand reads whether or not the reader is a member of vocal or not. I share articles from Vocal on Facebook because writers earn from every read. Readers do not have to be members.
Financial
Since I rejoined Vocal Medial, Financially, the monthly payout has been consistently and significantly better on Medium.
Medium money earned in March from reads = $355.59 Medium money earned in April from reads = $519.00
Vocal money earned in March from reads = $51.50 Vocal money earned in April from reads = $20.45
However, Vocal now financially rewards writers for milestones and achievements, think of them as a bonus.
March bonus for 10,000 read = $10.00 March bonus for a Top Story = $5.00
April bonus two Top Stories = $10.00
Tips: I will note that Vocal offers readers the opportunity to reward writers with tips, but I have yet to have seen any money from this and really do not expect to.
Though I am not going to make the next car payment from earning from Vocal, the extra money earned for submitting the same stories took little effort and made it worth the effort.
Recognition
Medium
Medium offers a chance for a post to be curated/distributed and shared across their platform. Thankfully, I have had this opportunity on multiple occasions and observe a direct correlation to income. For me, it has been a motivator to know when an article sparks the interest of the curators it will be highlighted and shared. The extra boost helps me know the people behind the scenes of the platform care and are taking an active interest in their writers.
Vocal Media
Prior to their platform reformat, Vocal did not recognize writers for accomplishments. This is the one change I greatly appreciate.
In my first comparison article this was my complaint.
“I submit the same articles to both platforms and have never had any incentives or encouragement from the Vocal staff. My motivation to continue working with Vocal is that a writer earns based on reads even if the reader is not a Vocal member. Because of this after an article is submitted to Medium, I also submit to Vocal if there is an audience on another platform that I can engage.”
Now, the platform dedicates an area on the front page to Top Stories and updates it daily. As both a reader and writer, this provides encouragement to focus on strong writing. Also, each community of which there are 33 has a section dedicated to Top Stories in their category. The recognition fill a void.
Competitions
Finally, comments on the writing challenges and competitions.
Medium — Different publications offer writing competitions. Once a writer is accepted to the publication, they can participate. Sometimes the prize is recognition which can prove valuable when the objective is to get attention and attract readers. Sometimes there are financial rewards for winners. Writers are required to take the initiative to discover what is available.
Vocal — Writers are notified of weekly challenges through emails. These have excellent financial rewards and are worth the time. Depending upon the interests of writers, financial rewards are within reach. Currently, I have entered two challenges and will hear of my success or lack of success on May 11. If anyone wants to offer support, you are invited to read.

In summary
Both platforms provide some monetary income but for me it has been limited. The amount has increased overtime with Medium as I have gained followers, been accepted into larger publications, and refined my writing to gain the attention of the curators. Vocal seems to provide fewer opportunities and requires more leg work from the writer to get noticed. For now, I will continue to publish in both.
