Vocal Media Just Introduced A New Way For Creators To Earn
About the creator bonuses. Is it worth it?
Imagine you’ve written a story on Medium. Medium’s curators think it’s cool, so they make it a top story. As usual, you get the congratulatory email. That email comes with a bonus credited to your medium account.
That is the very basic explanation of what Vocal Media has done. I am of course going to explain a little more, including how you can qualify for the bonus. It’s not for top writers only.
A quick introduction
Am sure most writers on Medium have heard of Vocal Media. But for those who have not, Vocal Media is a writing platform like Medium.
They have a lot of similarities. From the blogging experience to a few of their compensation plans.
Vocal Media has had the least amount of attention on Medium. Most people talk about writing on Medium and Newsbreak. It’s the $1000 that drives the hype for the latter I suppose, but I digress.
Vocal Media seems to have been an underdog. But that statement doesn’t hold true for the compensation plans the team there is rolling out.
As of today, Vocal Media has over 4 compensation plans in which a creator can get paid. That is 2 more than Medium’s own plans.
They recently introduced a new one called the Vocal Creator Bonus.
How it works
It is a tip given to you from the Vocal team for doing something like I’ll explain.
One of the compensation plans of Vocal Media is tipping. Here, creators can receive tips from people that read their stories.
One difference with the Vocal Creator Bonus is that it’s not sent to your stripe account like the normal tip. Rather, it’s added to your Vocal Wallet to count towards the earnings you make for that month.
When you create something that the Vocal team finds amazing, they will give you a bonus as a reward.
Who gets the bonus?
There are currently four types of accomplishments that can earn you a bonus.
- When your story gets selected as a top story.
- When you have reached an exciting milestone. That could be a certain number of reads or a milestone on your profile.
- One of the compensation plans of Vocal Media is challenges. So you could also get a bonus for winning a challenge. Challenge earnings will now go as a bonus to your Vocal Wallet.
- Giving back to the Vocal community can also get you a bonus. This means that sharing, liking, and tipping other creators can also get you a bonus.
Is it worth it?
I’m very new to writing on Vocal Media. But I have seen many writers who started long ago giving their take on what writing on Vocal Media is like. Check this one out from Zulie Rane.
Vocal Media’s monetization structure has a lot of luck element introduced to it. 3 out of 4 of its compensation plans have a lot of luck involved in them.
Save for the “reads”, the rest are not revenue streams that anyone can quantify month to month.
But since Vocal Media’s reads can only make you about $3.8 per 1000 reads, those other compensation plans are nice.
So the answer for me is grey. Yes, and No.
Yes, in that it can help supplement income for writers.
No, in that I cannot abandon medium and chase after the creator bonuses.
Should you quit Medium for Vocal Media
No. You cannot guarantee that 3 of the features that Vocal Media has will give you a stable income.
It would help if you took time to write on Vocal Media too as well if you are only writing on Medium at the moment.
It opens up the possibility of being able to earn from 6 features with the two platforms combined.
Conclusion
Do yourself a favor and write on Vocal media too. They need you; you need them, and you will be very grateful that you did.
